Thoughts on landing on a road

As long as the road is wider than the gear and there aren't power lines or other obstructions you should be ok. My Dad used to land his C140 on the dirt road by our house. I guess you should also try not to land near an intersection so there's less chance of hitting a road sign.

Class D / Tower / ASOS only - Initial Call?

Stillwater, Ok doesn't have one but probably should. That is one busy little airport anytime there is a football or basketball game. I flew in there for a bball game last year and I think the poor sucker in the tower only got to take a breath once about every 30 seconds.

    Training in advance?

Yes, the written will be in person. The oral will be part of your checkride. Honestly you don't really need to purchase a formal ground school program. Like AggieMike said, you can get everything you need right off the FAA's website for free. This is what I used and I also scheduled a couple...

    Training in advance?

Assuming you can get a medical, you really should look at going private. You can do so much more with it and while I don't know for sure I would bet you won't save as much as you might think by going light sport.

What does POA think of the Kitfox?

The Rans S-20 (and others models) is definitely worth a look. Don't know how tall OP is but I definitely fit more comfortably in a Rans than a Kitfox. I'm 6'3" though so that tends to be more of an issue for me than most.

I checked Out The $40,000 Saberwing Airplane

You learn something new every day. I never would have guessed that Fw 190's had wood in the design. I saw both of the flying (at that time) saberwings at OSH 17. Pretty cool, but awful low to the ground. I wonder if they have prop clearance issues when operating off a not so smooth grass surface.

    What's the First Step?

I learned on a Cherokee 140 and then transitioned to a high wing without a problem afterwards so that shouldn't be a big deal. You should look to fly 2 to 3 times per week if possible while training. That will help you retain info while giving you time for book learning in between flights. It...

Question on if the C-177 is a good plane?

Ours is a 68' model with the original O-320. A previous owner added a powerflow which helps but I can easily see why Cessna switched to O-360s for the second year when i'm loaded at or near gross. She's a very pleasant handling, comfortable bird, and I love to fly her. The only real drawback...

Question on if the C-177 is a good plane?

I'm 6'3" with a fairly long torso and have no problem being comfortable even with a seat that isn't height adjustable. I routinely fly with a 6'5" friend and he has no problems either.

Question on if the C-177 is a good plane?

I don't open them fully in flight, I close them down to about an inch or a little less as part of my pre takeoff checklist and that configuration provides plenty of ventilation even in 100 degree heat once you get rolling. I suppose I can see how having them all the way open in flight could lead...

When was the last time you went around?

I had 2 in one day a couple of months back. Winds were gusty and shifting all over the place and the hangars right next to the runway at the home strip can create some funky gusts when the wind is right. There's plenty of runway so I probably could have added power, stabilized things, and landed...

Question on if the C-177 is a good plane?

There are triangular windows that do open and will direct a ton of air into the cabin as soon as you start the engine. They can also be opened in flight up to 120 kts which keeps things cooler than most light singles and its asking a lot for my 68' to exceed 120 so I just open them and leave em :).

    A simple solution

I do this frequently and I think it makes for a simpler approach. One thing I do if i'm flying a low wing though is pause my turn for a second in the middle of the curve and dip the outside wing to check for anyone making an unannounced straight in.

Is CFI required to be present during cross-country solo flights?

My CFI is pretty similar to you I suspect. He's independent and instructs as a side to his day job because he wants to.
