To Hangar or Not to Hangar...

I'm based right next door, at Grand Prairie. If you don't know Texas weather, you will panic (with good reason) every spring and summer storm that blows through if you stay on the ramp. Hail is random, common, and can be really nasty. Check all the local airports for hanger space, you might...

Whats the magic spell to get a room at OSH Hilton?

From what I understand, the EAA books all the rooms at that Hilton for Airventure. Would be nearly impossible to get one. Try getting creative, like an AirBnB, or one of the houses the locals will rent out. I rented one a few years ago just a very few blocks from the airport. I was less...

Garmin GFC 500 with dual G5 under 9k

I have the dual G5's on order now (4-6 weeks expected delivery). Paid about $5500 for the instruments, install another 4K. The only autopilot that interfaces with it is the GFC500...which is not yet STC'd for the Grummans. Cessna 172, 182 guys, Piper Cherokees, they have those ready, and I...

    Feeling a little apprehensive

You'll find lots of helpful folks in the DFW area. Mike knows the north side better than I, but I'm on the south side if you want to get to know this area. Welcome to DFW!

Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy. Plane Repair

Bryan, Bryan, Bryan... Drain that tank. Take the plane to Fletchair. I'll give you a ride back. I'll even demonstrate slips with full flaps. They are a hoot. Your life will become much better.

    Grumman AA-5B Mechanic

I was going to keep my mouth shut, but the baiting has continued enough for me to speak up. Tom-D, I'm not sure why you are so against Grumman's, unless you either got caught buying one of Jim Bede's early ideas (i.e, 1960's), or just don't accept that there are other airplanes that are worthy...

    Grumman AA-5B Mechanic

Gary Vogt at AUCountry near Sacramento is a very good source in the area. He'll know if there's a good Grumman-savvy a&p in southern California. I'd recommend the guy that did the prebuy on my Traveler almost 10 years ago that I bought near LA, but he was a really old gentleman then, and I...

    [NA]Rock Drill use[NA]

Jeez... Rock comes out of a volcano, it's igneus, those rocks and stuff merge with other stuff, they become sedimentary, they get buried for millions years and baked to a pulp, they become metamporphic, meaning they get baked into something new.. This isn't radical stuff. That being said, I'ts...

    [NA]Rock Drill use[NA]

Volcanic or igneous is just that, volcanic. Granite is metamorphic rock. Totally different. The bottom levels of the Grand Canyon are metamorphic, like bedrock of the planet. Hawaii is volcanic. Dave, you are correct, a good portion of the SW Texas landscape is pretty volcanic near the...

    Mike Busch Webinars

A few years back, as a first-time owner attending one of his weekend seminars, I learned a lot from him that I'd not have learned from a once-a-year visit to an unknown A&P for an annual inspection. It was worth the time and money to be more informed.

C170 and Grumman Tiger midair - fatal - central Florida

Tiger pilot's name was Ann (I'll leave off the last name). Don't have the other pilots name, but they are reported by a local pilot as being part of a group of very proficient formation flyers. Something went terribly wrong. Condolences to all family and friends.

Choosing a CFI... old guy/gal or young guy/gal?

My CFI was probably 15 years younger (I started late), but he'd been a regional already, and wasn't chasing the majors. I learned far more from him than most of my pilot buddies did in their primary training.

    [NA]Rock Drill use[NA]

Really? Where in West Texas? The current drilling capital of the world? Drilling into volcanic or caliche rock can be tricky. Call a local water well driller. They can advise.

Why do you fly for fun?

Because I can. Because it fills a need in my soul that nothing else does. Because it takes me to another place I used to only see in my dreams. Because I love the challenge of doing something that seems impossible. The 'mission' of the flight is secondary to all that.
