    Standby Battery G1000

No, sounds like a problem that needs to be fixed before any serious IFR is flown! I've been teaching in G1000 a/c for 8 years now, and our shutdown is to turn off the master first, and I've never seen even a blink - the PFD stays on as if nothing happened. That is what you want if it ever...

    One hand on the yoke?

For airplanes with a stick, one hand is the only option  (unless the controls jam - then maybe 2 hands on one stick may be required )

Any experienced users of Garmin GNC 300XL?

It was one of the first (maybe even the first) IFR GPS certified, so it doesn't do any of the neat stuff the current units do. Very basic. The interface is pretty much Garmin knob twiddling for entering flight plans and approaches. Only LNAV approaches of course. If you fly an approach...

    Question about RNAV descent profile

Not missing anything. This is why you brief an approach! Always check nonprecision descents to estimate the descent rate required.

    Military speed limit under 10k

I worked at McDonnell Douglas back in the 80's and 90's. Local lore was that the Viking departure was for 'noise abatement', and that it was the test pilots who spearheaded the effort to get it approved 'so we can be good neighbors'

    Military speed limit under 10k

Yeah, a 'few' years back I trained students out of STL. One day an F-18 did the 'Viking deparure' noted above. After the requisite amount of time we were cleared for takeoff in our C-150. I responded "cleared for takeoff, but somehow it's just not the same" The controller keyed his mike and...

    AGI Currency Requirements??

Didn't you have to show an endorsement from a CFI to take the test? That would meet the requirements of (d). If not, are you working with a CFI that would be willing to endorse you? Taking the refresher course is the other way - para (c). It does say (c) OR (d).

    GPS approach requests

First, the vertical guidance with WAAS is GPS. When flying a GPS approach - just request the GPS approach. Whether it is an LNAV or LNAV+V or LPV is a function of your aircraft's equipment, and ATC/Tower doesn't know or care really (they will find out if you have to miss because you can't...

    Solo XC CFI Requirements

My process is the first solo XC is the same route as a (typically the first) dual XC. As noted already, it is a low risk confidence builder. After that I want students to go to airports they have NOT been to yet! Going to places you've already been doesn't prove much

Are there ways to maintain/improve eyesight?

I just went the other direction! Been wearing glasses since I was in 2nd grade (turned 64 last week). I just had cataract surgery completed in both eyes, and for the first time in my life I DON'T need glasses! I expected to need reading glasses, but can read the newspaper and computer...

    Is this legal?

Not legal. Not even close  Corporate pilot can't receive compensation for flying without a medical. S/he is just a passenger in the left seat! CFI doesn't need a second class to receive payment for instruction, but is not allowed to fly passengers for hire.

    Wind Measurements

The POH shows 'demonstrated' x-wind from the manufacturer. That is not a 'limit'. I look for higher wind days to do x-wind work with students (I'm one of those masochistic instructors ) Actual winds at the runway can vary a LOT from the 'reported' winds, especially if there are...

    Obtaining IFR Clearance Question

Nothing remarkable, just never had gotten the request before that first time. Definitely the first time I had tried to pick up a clearance from Ray while scud running! I don't remember trying that from VLL under similar conditions. Getting a clearance over the cell phone, especially with a...

    Obtaining IFR Clearance Question

This is exactly what happened, except that the very first time I'd gotten this question from ATC (in 40+ years of flying IFR), I decided to take the safest way out (was with a student at the time) and land to get the clearance. I had gotten clearances before at this same airport at lower than...

    physics question / skydiving weight

As long as they are falling at a steady rate (not accelerating). Just like a plane in a steady climb or descent - forces are balanced.

    Obtaining IFR Clearance Question

'Just' VFR is probably not good enough. You have to be able to be VFR at or above the minimum vectoring altitude (MVA) for your location. I tried to pick up a clearance under a low ceiling (1800 MSL in this case over 700 MSL terrain) a few months ago and was asked if I could/would accept...

Can I or can I not log PIC?

Yes you can log PIC - I agree with the previous assessment. You can file in your name - I tell my students: in the comments enter: "CFII - <your instructor's name>". You can file anything, it is accepting the clearance that requires the proper rating
