Foreflight - Add approach to flight plan for approach at intermediate airport

Or add folder(s) to the Plates page and put the desires approaches there. You will probably want more than one approach to each airport for an IPC anyway

    Close Call

I highly recommend an active Low Voltage annunciator - especially for IFR aircraft! There are devices you can buy that plug into the cigarette lighter port to do this - flash and/or sound to get your attention. Most older planes do not have anything - you have to notice the voltage or ammeter...

IR training: airplane vs. AATD vs. desktop sim

"Back in the day" when we had to teach ADF, the sim was great for that (vs. the airplane). Thank God that is a thing of the past. A simulator is great for developing a scan since there is no tactile feedback. Look away at a chart for too long and you could be doing rolls :) I had an ATC610 a...

ForeFlight was a crash monster yesterday!

Yeah, but it would probably not fit in your 182, or it would be too heavy :-)

    SwitchBox Control

I have exactly what KYLEB has, and it works great. It has a whitelist for approved phone numbers, all others are ignored. The only hassle I found was getting your T-Mobile online account access set up. Their security requires sending a text with a code to the phone number. Even their help...

    Operation Good Cheer

My second year flying for OGC. Kudos to all the controllers in MI, they really got a workout today. Glad we had good weather! They had over 250 planes participating today.

G1000 MFD Only w/ Backup Instruments

Correction: If you use the official Garmin mask - you can get vertical guidance because navigation (GPS/ILS) is still working in that scenario (ADHRS failure). If the DPE just covers the whole screen, you lose that.

G1000 MFD Only w/ Backup Instruments

Yeah, 'partial panel' with a G1000 (actually ADHRS failure mode) is still better than a complete 6 pack :-) But no way to get vertical guidance for an approach. You just have to 'rough it' with the altimeter.

CFI Here - Cross Country Flight Planning Question

DPE’s around here (SE MI) all require PVT applicants to do the XC planning on paper. I don’t have a problem with that. I teach my students how to use the GPS, but all XC’s are done on paper. IFR students all use electronic tools...

Atc question: pickup clearance in air or call.

In the Detroit area, a letter was sent to uncontrolled airports asking that IFR clearances be picked up by phone on the ground and not in the air to avoid cluttering the frequency. In the air, they will not issue an in-air clearance below their lowest vectoring altitude, so trying to scud run...

Angle of Attack: True or False

The Good news: You can make any airplane un-stallable by limiting up elevator authority. The Bad news: you won't be able to do a proper flare for landing in such a plane. If you take it to the extreme, you won't be able to climb! So can be true depending on how far back is 'not all the way...

Partial Panel G1000: Cessna vs. Cirrus

I use a full size AHRS failure screen mounted on cardboard. Cut out the holes for the knobs at the top and it slips on. You cut out the slot for the glideslope and the center of the HSI for the CDI. Garmin recommends mounting it on a foam backed cardboard. You can find pictures online and...
