    IFR C150 upgrades [help]

I would take the approach that you anything you put in can be taken out and moved to your new A/C with just a purchase of a new tray. Put in a newer WAAS gps and learn to fly current approaches. Use something cheap, like a KX165, for nav-2. When it comes to selling the A/C, you have the choice...

When to contact Approach before Tower? (VFR)

The original 'suggested initial call-up" was: aircraft "Orlando, N3333, landing Kissimmee, 15 West" The "landing Kissimmee" when "15 West" is nothing like what an IFR aircraft would state on initial contact under any condition I can think of. "VFR" could be added, but it's superfluous.

When to contact Approach before Tower? (VFR)

Actually, "VFR" is not needed. An IFR en-route contact would just be "Orlando, N3333, level 4000". As for an IFR that is being picked up en-route, the controller already knows about your plan, so simple: "Center, N3333, over <initial waypoint>, 5000" For picking up IFR in the air after takeoff...

When to contact Approach before Tower? (VFR)

Maybe. I always just contact approach anytime hear a Bravo so I have never tried it. It' is just too easy to just contact approach and let them tell me what they would like me to do. Orlando, and any Bravo, can be busy. Initial contact needs to tell them as much as you can, but 5 seconds is...

When to contact Approach before Tower? (VFR)

Have you looked at the Orlando area? SFB(charlie), ORL(delta) ISM(delta) Better call Olando (MCO) approach before trying to sneak under the Bravo. Even the special VFR approaches for SFB require ATC (Orlando Approach) approval to use. I have been based at SFB since before SFB became a Charlie...

Garmin Pilot + GLO2 on Android

The GLO-2 requires "bluetooth GNSS". I expected my Garmin Pilot software would 'see' the GLO-2 as another device to be accessed. Instead, it appears that Pilot just sees one system GPS, and Pilot does not know that the GPS in use is actually the GLO-2. But, I am still trying to verify that...

Owning and renting your aircraft through an FBO?

Been there, done that with two aircraft. The biggest question is which costs are passed to you and which are paid by the FBO. The last lease-back I attempted failed because the FBO wanted me to pay all the insurance. The problem is that the FBO will rent your aircraft last, after all of his...

Advice for speed/flap targets for landing a Saratoga?

No 3000 feet floating at the right speeds. 80 knots is way to fast across fence, even when fully loaded. Just you and another pilot with no baggage, 70 across the fence at most (2 notches of flap). These aircraft are made to fly at 3600#, you are lucky if you are anywhere near 3000# during a...

Advice for speed/flap targets for landing a Saratoga?

I have had Lances since around 1990 and this is the same numbers I use, with one exception. I sometimes add full flaps as I float in ground effect.(FYI, I also had a 182 and the advice to keep power on to keep the nose up is good for the 182 also. Both aircraft have long nose gear to keep the...

No GPS Instrument Checkride in 2021?

Good for you. I got my IR well before GPS was even defined and have kept my ADF 'just for fun'. The only suggestion is that due to the loss of non-GPS approaches to many airports, always "over-fuel". Your alternate may be unavailable and you may have to go a longer distance to get to somewhere...

    "minor" prop strike question

I had a prop strike between my a/c and a non-lit taxi light at night that seemed minor. The engine had only about 100 SMOH. The case required welding. My A&P/AI was totally surprised by the cracked case. Make sure the engine had a full tear-down inspection as there is no 'minor' prop strike. The...

    Opinions on a Lance expense

When looking at a Lance, watch out for 'over 5000 hours' as a new recurring wing spar inspection is required.

    Opinions on a Lance expense

Man, I had not been watching the cost of a used Lance. My insurance is about to renew and I need to up the hull value a bunch. Prices seem to have doubled in the last 4 years for a Lance.

    Opinions on a Lance expense

For every pound you put in the rear baggage area, you can usually put one pound in the front baggage area. Put someone in the back seat and that normally opens up the front baggage to full capacity. Just remember that sometimes the front baggage can get a little warm.

    Opinions on a Lance expense

Additionally, now that my Lance is in good shape, figure $2500 for an annual. Except for 'new hose' years. I have also had repeated landing gear power-pack problems for a while, until I was out of town and needed it repaired. The A&P at that location was qualified to rebuild it and said that my...
