VFR Flight planning through or around DC

John, See the attached screenshots. The flight originated in NY and I was receiving the FISB broadcast the whole time. A TFR for the SFRA is depicted at the 30 NM ring. No TFR is shown at 60 NM. Garmin Pilot running on an iPad mini 5 with a Garmin GDL 50 paired for FISB

VFR Flight planning through or around DC

John, I'll take screenshots on my next flight. My setup includes an iPad mini 5 with Garmin Pilot and a GDL 50 for ADSB in.

VFR Flight planning through or around DC

I fly into the SFRA from NY every few weeks. Not once has Garmin Pilot shown the 60 NM ring as a TFR. It only shows the 30 NM ring and the FRZ as TFRs. The issue isn't on the ground when getting data via the internet. The issue is that in the air, when ForeFlight receives its data from ADSB...

VFR Flight planning through or around DC

It is a ForeFlight issue. I use Garmin Pilot and when I'm within the 60 nm ring, it shows up as an airspace alert for the WASH DC VFR SPEED RESTRICTION. ForeFlight shows it as a TFR.

VFR Flight planning through or around DC

The SFRA isn't bad at all. If you're unfamiliar / uncomfortable, bring another pilot along on your first time through. Just follow the procedures and you'll be fine. NEVER squawk 1200 in the SFRA (this is grilled into you during the training) unless you like the idea of an F16 escort. As others...

Question re: GA flight around NYC area

JFK tower controllers are great and very helpful. Call them up when you’re over sandy hook so they know you are there and can give you advisories. There is a lot of helo traffic on that route and you’ll appreciate tower’s help. Call them up and request a VFR transition eastbound, south shore...

Flying for company on a PPL

This question or some variation of it comes up on these forums pretty often. Why not just get the commercial certificate? It really isn’t that difficult or time consuming to do.

Do you use flight following? if so how and when do you choose to use it?

I request it on every flight over 1500 ft. It’s safer and unless the controllers are very busy I get the feeling they like knowing what you’re up to and where you’re going.

If money was no object, help me create the perfect Cessna 182

Not trolling, just curious. Why is the 182 held in such high esteem here? I’ve always thought it was slow for its power and fuel burn. Also in this market most 182’s are just plain overpriced for what you get.

Does calm wind mean no bumps?

Daytime uneven heating of the ground can cause bumps on sunny days even if the winds are calm. As others have said flying early in the morning can minimize this risk. A night flight will also generally be smoother.

TIL: Garmin Pilot w/Garmin InReach For Satellite Messaging

I also keep an inReach mini on me. It’s a great little device that makes sense to use in the air as well as whenever you are out in the wilderness hiking / camping etc. There are a number of advantages for aviation use including being able to link it to your flight service profile to assist in...

    What do I need?...CPL Question.

There is no clear cut way to do it legally. Others have tried and failed. Besides the obvious limitations in the FARs which have been discussed here and elsewhere, if OP was to have an incident or accident their insurance may (and most likely would) deny coverage if the claim was made for an...

    What do I need?...CPL Question.

The FAA has a broad interpretation of what constitutes “compensation” including the ability to log flight time meaning even if no money exchange takes place, one can still be in violation of the FARs. Under certain circumstances the operation may be possible under part 91 if there is a common...

The true cost of owning an aircraft

You will generally spend double whatever a spreadsheet says you will spend. Still, it is 100% worth it. Just make sure you have enough cash on hand to deal with whatever WILL come up. If not, you will be better off waiting and saving until you do.

    Commercial operation question

119.1 lays out what you can do without a 135. What you are describing sounds a lot like a 135 operation.
