Buying a plane that isn't local.

Being successful at aircraft ownership is all about relationships. Your mechanic will be your lifeline and along with your insurance agent and one or two trusted fellow pilots should be close. I’d focus on building these relationships first. I spent years building relationships with the above...

Buying a plane that isn't local.

Honestly the best approach is to fly your mechanic who will be doing your annuals in the future out to do the prebuy. Using someone else (especially someone unknown) becomes a pay now or pay later situation come your first annual after purchase. Review the logs with your mechanic first before...

Is there a source for runway conditions at untowered airports?

Also, I’ve had approach controllers give me a heads up to snow covered runways at my destination airport. I’m assuming this is a courtesy and should not be used as a primary source for this information.

Is there a source for runway conditions at untowered airports?

NOTAMs. If none are published, overfly the field and take a look. If it looks good, land.

    Flight Plan ACTIVATION Garmin Pilot

FF users swear up and down the walls that FF is the only option out there. FF is a great tool but honestly with the latest versions of GP and FF, there really aren’t a lot of differences between the two products anymore from a features standpoint. In fact I don’t know if the FF faithful that...

    Petersburg VORTAC - 1-1/2 stars

This reminds me of some of the 1 star reviews people posted for the Grand Canyon. 1 star - “I thought it would be bigger”.

    FlightAware purchased

It’s worked for me more often than not so far. I don’t expect it would work everywhere or for everyone. Some FBOs don’t monitor inbound messages. Others like getting the heads up and subscribe to various services (FlightAware, FBOlink, etc).

    FlightAware purchased

The product is aimed at VFR operations. It doesn’t do anything meaningful for IFR. For VFR operations it allows you to create an alternative to an IFR flight plan that can be tracked and provides automated notifications to the FBO and anyone else you designate or subscribe. I fly a VFR...

    FlightAware purchased

Then from the sounds of it the FlightAware Aviator product isn’t for you. In my case I operate in major east coast cities and bravo airspace and would prefer to avoid fumbling around with getting the FBO on Unicom at the exact time I’m at the busiest portion of the flight. Giving them an...

    FlightAware purchased

Their aviator subscription works for some people (me included). One nice feature is the ability to create a “flight intent” which in flightaware appears like a VFR flight plan with a scheduled departure and arrival time, and planned route. This information can then be automatically send to the...

German Food Restaurant at East Coast Airport

Gunk Haus is also in that area and is fantastic. N45, N89, and KPOU are reasonably close to it.

    Better coast for GA?

I’ve lived in both NY and CA and definitely prefer NY. I prefer the lifestyle on the east coast. for GA the NY area certainly has some challenges, especially as it relates to proximity of airports from the city (long drive or train ride) and lack of available hangar space. That said there are...

    COVID Vaccine Booster

I agree on waiting. I was spent after the second pfizer dose and took about 24 hrs to feel normal again. Not sure what to expect for the booster but was curious if there was any updated guidance from the FAA.

    COVID Vaccine Booster

Does anyone know if the 48hr no fly / no safety related duty rule still applies to COVID booster shots like it did for the original doses? I ran a quick search online and came up empty handed.

Things that make you go "hmmmm..."

Not sure if this is the reason the 1200 ft cutout by LGA is still there, but the throgs helicopter route runs right through it. This is convenient because it provides additional time to call LGA and get a bravo clearance when they are busy.

    AOPA article on 9/11 attacks

Just to play devil’s advocate… you can technically fly a 737 under Part 91 without all the upgraded security stuff (TSA, armored flight deck doors, etc..).

Check my math.. our my cost estimates accurate.

My only advice would be to have a solid chunk of cash locked away in an account somewhere to deal with unplanned maintenance related items that WILL come up from time to time. There is no right or wrong answer for the amount you should have in reserve but I like to plan conservatively and lock...

Anyone else tired of hearing about eVTOL?

They will fall out of vogue when people realize that an aircraft that is supposed to operate in urban environments and can neither glide, nor autorotate, is monumentally stupid on several levels.
