OSH - AIRCRAFT DOWN SOUTH OF ULTRALIGHT AREA

Airport shut down until after the airshow, black smoke south of ultralight area. In hold for a long time. . . cam shows a man pointing to the south out of camera view during a light copter/gyro demo pattern, as camera pans smoke appears. Equipment and scooters roll immediately. Social media...

OSH - T-6 goes into Lake Winnebago Saturday 7/29 morning

OSHKOSH - A plane crashed into Lake Winnebago and rescue units have been sent to the scene Saturday morning. Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue shift commander Troy Jahns said the plane crashed into the lake between Oshkosh and Neenah. The department has sent a rescue boat with a dive team to the area...

Plane down at Osh. just now.

Plus going into the sun or away from it. We had 3 mile in fire smoke but turning into the morning sun made that disappear quickly in the glare.

    Watching Oshkosh Arrival

Things moving well this Saturday morning. There was a C172 that cut in line to FISK and the cropduster working underneath the stream - fun to imagine the sight. A "Sterile" runway stop at FISK already. I'm using the live stream with both towers and FISK, as usual. One stuck mike right now...

    What happened to Jim Tweto?

Don't know if I would settle too hard on pilot error. The runway was within his skill set. The wind shears could claim anyone, regardless of experience. Aviation is subject to the unpredictable and the surprising. We want to believe that isn't possible, but it is.

    What happened to Jim Tweto?

Crash site was 1200 feet from the broken tree, assuming accelerating under power. Yes, possible shear. Wondering if the stab jammed nose up. Somehow between the tree and the site it had enough vertical energy to crush the wings and tear up the front end. A flatter path wouldn’t have done that...

    What happened to Jim Tweto?

Reading the NTSB prelim, the question I have (other than the winds and weight and balance) is if the control continuity is also the ability to move the elevators. If not, it would seem that the tree snag strike on the left stab could have jammed the elevator controls leading to a stall into the...

Aeronca Champ down out of KDLH

Most of us in the Aeronca field have retrofitted SH by now. This airplane had them too. Looks like a unsurvivable impact.

Aeronca Champ down out of KDLH

"Maybe steel tube frames don't crumple and absorb energy like more modern aluminum aircraft?" Mooney for years had advertised that its cabin had a steel tube roll cage design, unlike the competition. Foam planes simply fall into bits and pieces. Cessnas will fold behind the rear window. It...

-Finally- an honest assessment of electric airplanes

Some of the comments by folks on battery science reminds me of reading 1960 Popular Mechanics or Popular Science. A lot of dream vaporware. The question to be asked is like aviation in 1920-1950: What do you do when 90% of the data and theory has been already discovered? Comparing the...

    Jim Tweto 1954-2023

A sad day for GA. He was a good rep for us all. In a compassionate move, family wants memorials to go to the passenger.

Buzzing houses going in Schuylerville NY

It doesn’t matter. If people find this troublesome it simply needs to stop for the sake of us all. The pilot isn’t flying in a safe and sane manner. Anyone defending this is . . . Well, enough said.

ADS-B and Mod-C in aircraft cert’d with no elec.

Wow, this brings to mind the expression: Philadelphia Lawyers. It's so simple. Just stay out of the B and C airspace and the veil doesn't apply by reg for planes certified without an electrical system. Fly with your eyes out and remember your little video screen doesn't give the whole picture.

ADS-B and Mod-C in aircraft cert’d with no elec.

Stay out of class B and you can fly in the veil and under the shelves. Don’t overthink it and read the advisory stuff from FAA and AOPA and the type clubs. A few CFIs are up on the non-electrical exemptions but I wouldn’t count on it. I consider over the top as off limits.

Disney Perm Flight Restrictions going away?

If you want to turn the public over GA just start flying low level helicopters over Disneyland. If this discussion can just get off of “me” and think of the public.

Kathryn's report is permanently closed :>(

Well, to quote the Princess Bride: It only is mostly dead. Last update in February and that's about the longest it went without a resurrection. Unless someone has an update, looks like its gone. . . The Sportscruiser looks like the last one standing. . . to use that phrase with irony...

    Another one down.

Another accident where the rescue crews can’t find the site due to heavy fog. Big clue. So sad when a couple of hours one way or another often is clear skies.

    Paint colors and safety

Aeronca designed the Champ with visibility in the TP a major consideration. Hap was the designer of the post war Aeroncas colors and interiors and after a flight in the Champ, came up with the Lemon Yellow and international orange belly.
