Woman hit by landing airplane. Fatal

Quote: "interterminal shuttle is bearing down on me. I start to slow to let it pass in front of me when the instructor says "keep your speed up, aircraft have the right of way." OK, I'm aghast that a CFI would think that way when there is a dangerous situation coming. It's not the time to...

Are we still debating that you have to get the plane in the air VS running it on the ground for 30 minutes is good enough to get the moisture out?

GANs column a couple of months back had the interesting idea of putting in a quart of preservative oil and your regular choice of oil in the plane when you can't fly frequently. He is a lubrication expert, retired, from Lycoming. When you are flying more often, change it out to the regular...

KTOA - Sling stall crash at Zamperini Field, CA

"Apparently I was never taught that. I have no idea what it means." When setting up for a forced landing, never turn away from the field you are aiming for. You can easily find yourself outside of gliding range. And the field at your back really shortens the time you have to find power lines...

KTOA - Sling stall crash at Zamperini Field, CA

Another thing apparently they don’t teach: Never turn away from a forced landing spot.

    Another influencer CFI kills student

Makes you think fondly of the old salt who does instructing with the leather flying jacket leaning against his Cub. We get people wanting to learn to fly in six weeks on some other groups. Money and instant licenses and ratings aren't the way to go.

    PA-44 down in Oregon

Like many, I'm sad that someone or something didn't recover from the spin. From my SEL experience I would think "Power off to both engines, push, rudder and recover." It's even a case where power off and let go of the controls - recover from spiral dive might have been a better option. It's...

Redundant "traffic" and other annoyances . . .

"Traffic" is to keep the flight school office, which is "unicom", from answering on the same common frequency. Honestly, there are worse issues than this one.

    Richard McSpadden Crash

There are some airports where you absolutely need to GoogleEarth a plan before you take the runway and even with that, there ends up being few options. If I see the photo posted above, it looks like a ridge line 50 feet above the site.

What attributes do you think new MOSAIC compliant LSA aircraft should have to return General Aviation to 10,000 aircraft sales per year?

Buying a plane and keeping a plane maintained and sheltered are two different financial tasks.

House Rep husband dies in Alaska crash

Add to that gusty winds on the departure end of the strip. Sounds as if you were flying with a 370 pound passenger in the rear seat. The NPR article was far better than the Seattle Times piece, as befits an audience up there that includes many more pilots. Sad that he survived but passed away...

I can't make sense of this crash

Need to mention the massive increase in drag that a windshield strike adds to flight. Know a C150 that survived a strike on final.

KTOA - Sling stall crash at Zamperini Field, CA

To do the impossible turn it's simple math. A rate of climb has to exceed the rate of descent and then have enough energy at the end to line up with the runway, to flare and land. Most lightly powered planes fail the math when you add the three second startle. An Aeronca can climb at 350 fpm...

What attributes do you think new MOSAIC compliant LSA aircraft should have to return General Aviation to 10,000 aircraft sales per year?

From the bottom feeder perspective here: The Vashon Ranger and the RV-12 are well in the range of the price points here, but the barriers to owning an airplane are so high that they will never achieve the volume needed to get the prices down. Take away all the new shining goodies in the OP -...

    AOPA VREF

“I'm thinking if one waits 10-15 years....when all the boomers stop flying....there should be lots of good aircraft available ...cheap” The same thing was said about the WW2 generation passing. Or the prediction of numerous pilot shortages over the years that were imagined and didn’t happen...

    AOPA VREF

Agree that the difference in prices for the low end isn’t that much and soon is swallowed up by hangar rent, annuals and maintenance. Purchase price is just the admission ticket to other expenses and in the long run isn’t as great a factor as one thinks.

    Seaplane Fatal, Lake Sammamish, 9/16

It was about six miles south. "“They saw the plane trying to go up two to three different times — up, came down, up, came down,” Wong said. “It sounded kind of sputtering, like the engine was stalling. And at the last point, when it was about 50 feet in the air, it took a nose dive into the...

From the reporting so far: 1 witness: "The T-6s were forming up on their base leg which is right over our head, and I hear a sound unexpected. Race was over-camera stowed, I looked up to see debris from the light colored aircraft fluttering away from the area as the aircraft spiraled nose...
