Quick Tip: Aeronautical Map with AutoHighlight in ForeFlight

Wayne, I've been flying that way for some time now and really like it too. I remember last year landing at an FBO somewhere in Montana or Wyoming and one of the guys was looking at the iPad display, wondering what app I was using. He'd never seen anyone use Foreflight that way before and didn't...

    Boeing 737 Crash in Iran...

In an attempt to keep this somewhat apolitical...I've been wondering if the Russian missile system can receive ADS-B. I cannot find much about it other than some advertising videos mostly in Russian. You'd think if they saw an ADS-B transmission it might temper the desire to shoot. Was the...

    GDL52 battery dead

I think I might know why these Sirius XM receivers are sealed (first from Sporty's, then Garmin). Maybe there is an edict from Sirius requiring it. Perhaps they want to keep nosy engineers from trying to hack the data encryption. Would Garmin build an un-serviceable unit otherwise? Don't know...

Night IFR, a whole new ballgame

Probably a long shot...but is there any chance you have some color blindness? Probably not since I presume you have a valid medical cert and that's one of the things that's checked. Just thought I'd ask anyway...

    Two VFR ATC questions-

    4. I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.

    Two VFR ATC questions-

Let's make this a little more fun. Let's say I'm flying IFR, and call up ATC for flight following and they tell me to remain VFR. What now? Multiple choice: I should castigate the controller for trying to cancel my IFR flight plan, or... I'm in trouble and the FAA will revoke my instrument...

    GDL52 battery dead

The state of affairs with portable ADS-B and XM weather receivers is sad. I bought an SXAR1 from Sporty's a year ago and it is already obsolete. There are battery and other issues with my SXAR1 now and Sirius will only exchange for a refurbished unit -- which will not have a new battery. The...

    Best value engine monitor?

Been using JPI in Turbo Arrow now for over 1500 hrs. Looks like this TSIO360FB may make it to TBO w/o a single cylinder replacement. Engine logs show cylinder replacements with previous incarnations of the engine beginning at 6-800 hrs (no JPI back then). Based on that, the JPI has paid for...

    California Hangar Property Tax

I have a hangar rented in Sonoma County -- rented from the county at STS. Yes, they force me to pay their property tax on both the land the hanger is built on, and the hanger itself. I get two tax bills, one for the land and one for the hangar. Welcome to the People's Republic of California...

    GoPro Attachments

Thanks for the update! I knew it was okay to use clamps and suction cups inside but had never seen a more detailed discussion about mounting stuff on the outside...

    Military GPS Testing around OAK?

I'm used to seeing this done in places like the Nevada desert where there's not much air traffic. I've been through these areas before and the GPS receiver simply loses the signal. I'm wondering what objections the FAA may have raised when they wanted to do this in congested airspace. Or did the...

    Military GPS Testing around OAK?

For five days (10/7 to 10/11) from 1PM to 5PM local time they're potentially messing up GPS nav in some very busy airspace. Is this wise? Don't plan on doing any GPS approaches in the bay area then. https://www.faasafety.gov/files/notices/2019/Oct/MOCA130_19-57_GPS_Flight_Advisory.pdf

    GoPro Attachments

This is not a comment about safety -- I'm not going to weigh in on that. My impression has been that attaching ANYTHING to the airframe would create an airworthiness concern with the FAA. I'd appreciate hearing from others as to whether this viewpoint is accurate.

    Propeller slip vs propeller efficiency

Not sure if this will help any, and is maybe even a bit off topic, but this touches on one of my pet peeves. Some of the FAA exam questions on aerodynamics and engine operation are based theories and concepts that are questionable at best. Problem is, in order to pass the tests, one must...

    ADS-B Ghost?

Thanks! -- It says Albuquerque Center next to the two hits...so I guess it was just someone getting the tail number wrong for flight following...

    ADS-B Ghost?

Good question. The Flightaware track log only shows two hits...but I don't know how to tell if these are sourced from ADS-B or maybe an older Mode-C transponder...? Any idea how I could figure that out?

    ADS-B Ghost?

I installed ADS-B out earlier this year. I got the FAA report and all looks great. Recently, I've noticed that someone else seems to be transmitting my 24-bit ICAO code. Flight aware is saying that my last flight is 1500 miles away from where the A/C is really located. So, I'm assuming that's...

Is this a good puzzle for students?

The different climb gradients give you about 1000 feet of clearance on the 481 foot obstacle (I guessed it is about 12,000 feet from the RW36L MAP on the Z procedure. I didn't think that much obstacle clearance was required on the MAP segment. I also see that the X approach requires 410 ft/nm...

Is this a good puzzle for students?

That was my guess...you get to go 0.3nm further before MAP with the Z approach, so would have to climb that much steeper to miss obstacles on the missed. The extra 20 feet higher seems a lot less important than the extra 0.3nm.

Is this a good puzzle for students?

This is not the first time these approaches at KAPC have been discussed here. Recently, I was planning some practice approaches and and considered the RNAV 36L at Napa County (KAPC). Actually there's three of them, X/Y/Z. It took quite some time to go through these plates to figure out what all...
