You obviously don't own a Piper aircraft, or you might be more concerned about the idea of a wing falling off while thousands of feet in the air. Next time you're up there, give that a thought or two. My a/c isn't anywhere near the limits the FAA set in the AD, but I'm still concerned about it...

I suppose it could have been a wing spar. If so, one wing will likely be found elsewhere. The debris field is so dense and compacted it's impossible for me to tell if there are two wings in there or not. Listed with 2800 hrs in 2013, not very high time at that point...

Sure seems like a pilot error, and ground controller is pretty busy. That said, it might have been possible to spot AA106 out of position prior to issuing the clearance to cross 31L. That sure is a lot of if's, and I'm not sure what the official duties of ground controller are...so perhaps...

Perhaps this happened a while ago and I missed it. Either way, I just noticed this today: Apparently, NOTAMs are no longer "Notices to Airmen", but "Notices to Air Missions". I guess humans are no longer required. The next time I get a briefing, I'll pass those notices along to the mission...

Found this overhead photo today. Looks like the pilot was trying to land on the road between the graves. May have missed, or veered off the road after touchdown. Either is feasible since it appears that the left-side prop was feathered when it broke off.

A few years ago I briefly wondered about purchasing one of those Dukes...the guy who does my annual inspections told me to perish the thought. He said they are real hangar queens.

The last link, a thread on twitter claims the descent rates don't seem normal, but to my eye they are about 1,000 fpm which would not be unusual for that a/c...yes? Eventually we'll probably hear from the pilot since both occupants survived...
