Juan Browne -- he's a 777 pilot who has a utoob channel named "Blancolirio" and does reviews of aviation accidents, among other things. He's usually pretty good, but missed the fact that the accident a/c here was turbocharged.

    Plane VS house in NM

Yep, thanks for the clarification -- it's the T310R that's turbocharged, and the 310R is not.

    Plane VS house in NM

Okay, now I'm just confused. I rechecked the info for the 310R engines and they are TCM Continental IO-520-MB. The IO prefix indicates normally aspirated. A turbocharged engine would have a GTSIO or TSIO prefix. Can someone clear this up...are the 310R engines turbocharged or not?

Thanks for looking that up. Juan should have caught that one....just goes to show that we're all fallible.

Sounds like engine failure on take-off, with a/c above max single engine altitude (DA, that is) Juan was quick on this one:

7/8/23: Bizjet down F70 (French Valley CA)

More info here, plus a drone video of the crash site. Part of the video shows some white sheets on the roadway starting around 00:40 or so. I would rather not think about what they might be covering. https://nypost.com/2023/07/09/6-killed-in-southern-california-plane-crash-identified/

Data above is for 1 hour after the crash (I think that's right, anyway). Here's ASOS data closer to time of crash (not really any different): 081115Z AUTO 00000KT 1/2SM FG OVC003 12/12 A2986 RMK AO2,M

NTSB final out now. As usual, good review by Juan Browne here:

    Something going on around DC

I was agreeing with him about the cabin pressurization issue -- not the part about dropping over. I should have clipped that part out of the quote.

    Something going on around DC

I think what happened in the Payne Stewart case was a very sudden decompression. (Didn't the NTSB conclude that a valve in the system failed catastrophically which caused a very fast loss of pressure?) When that happens there's no time for heat exchange between the air and it's surroundings...

    Something going on around DC

I agree with you that cabin pressurization is one of the more likely scenarios. The AOPA video is thoughtful and makes good points. Gryder...is Gryder. And of course, it's all speculation anyway. Also, just saw this article in the NY Post about the pilot...

    Something going on around DC

Yeah, I think that was the sequence. I ended up getting an N-number change on an a/c because the sequence of numbers in the original N-number was easy to confuse, and ATC would often get it wrong. Just got tired of that, so changed it.

Just FYI and FWIW, I think that two previous tail numbers on the Citation are YV3178 and N103BG. At least they seem to have the same A/C serial number. I found some photos at the links below. https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8312072...

Oh Continental, what have you done now?

More fun at the FAA. They are superseding with AD 2023--5-16. Got this e-mail from them this morning: FAA AD 2023-04-08 - Continental Engines - Superseded for Missing Engine Models Notice Number: NOTC2904 Since the FAA issued AD 2023-04-08, the FAA determined that IO-470-A, -C, -F, and -LO...

Oh Continental, what have you done now?

Nothing changed in the AD itself, but their first e-mail to registered owners was a real freak-out...and I kinda suspect they got a lot of flak about that.

Oh Continental, what have you done now?

Me thinks the FAA realized the initial release of this AD was a bit overbroad. Here's the text from the first e-mail I received from the FAA on 2/26/23: This AD and final rule is effective February 23, 2023 and affects any crankshaft assembly on a Continental Engine. Today, I received an...
