    Cheap hangar construction options

The least expensive thing will be to leave the floor dirt, set posts in the ground, put a horizontal beam over the posts and buy some trusses, plywood the trusses and put a roof on it. Hangars are pretty big, its still going to be expensive. You can leave the floor, sides and hangar door off...

    IFR Checkride Flight Planning Question

Ask your instructor, he may have previous experience with THIS DE. Plan on diverting or dealing with failed equipment. Good luck! There are some real world reasons to plan on airways (high MEAs going direct is one). Of course in the real world you pretty much file one plan, get another when you...

Why would a CFI not declare in this situation?

Why doesnt a pilot want to declare an emergency? He doesn't want to make it any more exciting than it already is. and If it doesnt get you anything extra, why declare? Its not like ATC can come up there and fix your problem. If you need to sure, declare. If you do declare, write ATC a thank...

Sunny, they said. Zero percent chance of rain, they said.

Yes, that's what is called having "weather in the cockpit" :-)

Why would a CFI not declare in this situation?

I had a grease fitting spew grease all over my windshield on takeoff. I turned around and landed with no forward visibility. The airport didnt have a tower and there wasnt anyone else in the pattern. No sense in declaring an emergency that I could see. I just landed by looking out the side...

Do you climb at full power on big piston engines

Put me in the camp that believes higher power, higher rpms and higher temps shorten engine life. Definitely follow the engine mfg recomendations.

    Inheriting IRA money

Be careful what lawyer you pick to help handle an estate. Lots of ways for lawyers to, lets be kind, unfairly enrich themselves by taking from the estate. Best option is a bank trust department estate lawyer. They will charge more, but because the bank is looking over their shoulder, its harder...

    Organized Alaska group flying

Fairbanks has (or used to have) campgrounds with plane tiedown, firepit and tables. They also have a shower. One consideration about "group flying". Airplanes with different speeds sometimes don't fly well "together". It can be done. Let the slower planes leave earlier. Have the fast planes...

Do you climb at full power on big piston engines

Just one data point. I had a Husky that made 3000 hours and it indicated as high as 468 in a climb in the summer. The limit was 500, posted right on the panel above the CHT gauge. But yes, run it as cool as you can.

What GA Planes Would Fly In This Wx

I landed in 33 knots crosswind component in my Husky. It was a steady wind. The rudder was all the way to the floor. So thats where the Husky runs out of rudder. Its the gusts that make it hard. I can usually handle winds in the 20's, when they get into the 30's it gets to be a no-go (or find a...

Will a 150 take off on grass?

Depends on the grass. I agree with taking the wheel pants off. The uneven surface loosens them and they need repair. At least thats my experience.

IFR: File to IAF or Airport?

It makes sense to file to a VOR or intersection when you intend to cancel (due to it being VFR). I filed from Gary Indiana to Des Moines and got my clearance the ATC guy asked me if I was going to land at Des Moines. I said no, Ill cancel before I get there. He said I should file to the VOR. So...

Flying in the mountains means flying below the ridges and peaks and landing at airports in the valleys. Colorado has airports at 7000' surrounded by mountains that are 14000' high.

Would you choose to learn to fly in a tailwheel aircraft?

I own and fly a tandem tailwheel and I think a pilot would be better off learning in a 172 or Cherokee or similar. Reasons are lack of willing tailwheel instructors, few tailwheel rentals, instructor doesn't have good access to radio and other controls, DE might not be comfortable giving a...
