Flew approach to intermediate fix yesterday

I always liked having as much as possible in my active flightplan. That way, if I need a waypoint it's in the flightplan and I don't have to go find it whoknowswhere. Also, learn to use the OBS mode. It is very useful.

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

Take a look at what LYCOMING says, its essentially saying the same thing I am saying which is lean to an rpm drop (some call it a "stumble") then richen to peak RPM! RPM! Right from Lycoming. LYCOMING SAYETH: "For direct-drive and for normally aspirated engines with a prop governor, but...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

Husky with a carburetor Lycoming 0360, Hartzel prop, marvel schebler carb. Same as Mooney and others Think about it. If you lean it enough, the rpms gotta go down. In the extreme case where do rpms go when you pull the mixture to cutoff? Of course you don't pull it nearly that far. Do it at...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

Boy, now I know what Galileo must have felt like. Now go out and drop two balls of the same size, one made of lead and the other made of copper... This is easy people, just to out and conduct two experiments. 1. Do a runup, but pull the prop back a bit so you know its not on the stops 2...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

Control systems always have a delay. Nothing happens instantaneously. It takes time for the governor to adjust the blade angle to keep the rpms steady when there is a change in power, whether the change in power is from the mixture or the throttle. By making the valve a smaller opening the...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

The underlined agrees with me, and I agree with it. Maximum RPM means the RPMs change when you change the mixture!!! And the change is observable on the tach. Constant speed within a range yes, but you can still get 50 or 100 RPM difference from the change in power that the mixture causes.

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

What people have a misunderstanding of if they think at runup, 1800-1900 rpm or so, is they think if the prop knob is all the way in that the prop is at the stops, fully flat. And that this is the reason they get an rpm drop. Well, you DO get an rpm drop, but its because of the lag in response...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

The fact that it is NOTICEABLE is why it works! The pilot leans by pulling the mixture, then he NOTICES an rpm drop and he knows to richen it slightly. Stop thinking you know the answer to this puzzle (that it is on the stops and there can't be any lag in governing rpm), open your mind, sharpen...

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

Yes there is: You know you are in governing range if you turn the prop knob out and you get an rpm drop. And if you get an rpm drop, when you pulled the prop knob out, you know you are now NOT at the stops.

Please explain propeller rpm vs. altitude vs. ground speed?

I just brought up the pilot valve to help people realize that the system is designed to work this way on purpose. Makeing that valve more restrictive causes more rpm drop, less restrictive, less rpm drop. So many pilots have been told that rpms don't drop at all due to power reduction with a...
