Lycoming SB 593A, annuals are fun!

I would suggest they send the cylinders to a cylinder shop for installation of the valves and proper honing of the cylinder bores. You do not want a "buddy ball" hone job on $3,000 cylinders. While they are doing that might as well check the exhaust valves and guides. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    Engine Gurus

I think the power reduction 1"/min is an overkill on a NA IO-540. I personally use about an 8 second application of power runway permitting. In particular I am gentle with the throttle if the engine has not been up to cruise operating temperatures. It hurts when I hear the roar of a big engine...

    O-360 oil pressure

It is quite unusual that the oil pressure is the same at idle and cruise. I would check the gauge calibration. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    Fuel pressure fluctuating

Your FP readings are OK. It only takes about 1/2 psi to keep the float bowl filling as fuel is sucked out. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

O-470L vs O-470R. What is the difference?

The "L" and "R" are basically the same except the "L" has 4 counterweights on the crankshaft and the "R" only has 2. Charlie Melot Zephyr REngines.

    Purchase decision Saratoga II TC

Basig in CT do you really need the turbo. The cost, weight and fuel burn that come with the turbo system are serious numbers. Review your intended mission profiles.

0-200 intermittent loss of engine power

Check the exhaust valves for freedom of movement with the springs removed. Ream the guides on any tight ones -or better yet jsut ream all four. Not a big $deal. Last time I stuck one it was at 100' at the end of the runway. Grossed so it would not climb at all. Had to fly about 5 miles going...

    Mechanic Recommendations at KPGD

We have had Todd at A-1 and Jamie Trudeau at Trudeau warbirds as customers for many years and have great reappect for their abilities. I moved to PGD in January. My Twin Comanche now lives in Hangar 20413. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

Old but low time factory reman

The cam and tappets can be inspected without splitting the case or pulling cylinders. It would be a good idea to pull a cylinder since these were made in the 1990-2000 time span when in all their great wisdon TCM did not put choke in the cylinder barrels. Typically when you pull cylinders mid...

Archer III - Starting and Carb Ice Detector

\IIRC I just left it on all the time. In a 182 I used to fly it was necessary to turn the sensitivity way down becasue that installation makes ice to some level any time conditions are even close. I am not sire how it works. I thought the probe had an optical sensor? It screws into the side of...

Archer III - Starting and Carb Ice Detector

Assuming it has an O-360-A4M engine and it has not been modified it has one impulse mag on the left. Per the POH start on the left mag or risk a kickback and broken starter. An carb ice detector on a Lycoming is a waste of money since they only ice in extreme conditions. I had ice in an O-360...

    Oil pressure issues Lycoming O235.

Check to see that the oil filter adapter plate PN LW-12999 which sandwiches between 2 gaskets between the filter adapter and accessory housing was not forgotten. This part is common only to the 235' and has been missed by mechanics not familiar with it. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    Interesting Mag Issue

If you hear it but do not feel any roughness it could be piston slap. Going to single mag or LOP changes the flame pattern and loads the piston differently. Listen for a knack knack sound at idle to confirm it.

    Grumman Tiger engine cost

No one at Zephyr would state that an engine being overhauled would not be test run. It is required by the engine overhaul manual so no ne can return an engine to service overhauled without test running it. We test run all engines that have had the case split even if only for a repair. Charlie Melot

Charleston Jet - $2800 alternator on Cherokee

My on the road alternator story is quite the opposite. Six years or so ago ee departed Beef Island in the BVI's for Provo T&C and both alternators at some point quit. We diverted into Isla Grande PR where we were recommended to a flight school maintainance facility. They jumped on it immediately...
