Piper Warrior large engine vibration between 900-1200 RPM

+1 on the above. If the scat tube burned up there was "fire" going into the carburetor. The venturi may have been damaged by the "fire". Wit regard to the prop an out of track condition will cause vibration that increases with RPM but it will NOT go away above 1400. An out of balance prop...

oil leak; prop seal opinion wanted.

Scratches on the pilot portion of the shaft come from working the prop to get it on or off. This will not cause an oil leak. The leak could be the seal... Charlie Melot X Zephyr owner.

    First Airplane Purchase: Piper Arrow

$25K will buy a good overhaul with new cylinders and overhaul of the engine accessories. Add another $5-8K to cover installation, mounts, hoses, vacuum pump, governor, prop and repairtrd to exhaust and baffling. If the cam is OK it ought to do another thousand hours. Installing a 200 is just not...

    Low Time Engine ?

Each engine is it's own little science project. Scope it and if the cylinders are rust free the cam ought to be OK. A few years ago I bought a NEW Lycoming IO-360 that sat in the factory box in FL for 17 years. I paid a price reflecting my cost to tear it down and do whatever it needed. Upon...

    AD list

Does anyone know of a service that will provide a list and the listed ADs for one specific aircraft and engine? I now own part of a 1973 172 that is missing some of the ad lists and has illegible entries and entries saying all ad's C/W. The shops I ran all had various expensive annual...

    Fuel Hose Fitting Corrosion

Looks like Stratoflex or equivalent hose. FIVE year life. I thought ten years was OK until I had a failure at 7 years. Type "D" "Teflon" hoses are forever and cost effective.

    Welding

No! Even an FAA certified repair station cannot do it unless they have an appropriate approved process specification. It's a big deal to get that approval.

What would you do with it?

Continental crankshaft flanges are surface hardened and very prone to cracking. One IO-520 that hit a very light towbar and did not stop gad a cracked crank that could well have been caused by the strike. Another TSIO-520 had the nose gear collapse on the takeoff roll. The prop was destroyed...

    My engine fell out

I did not say anything about fixing what isn't broken. I was just pointing out some of the pitfalls in putting it back together with the right parts.

    Hi Charlie Melot

Much to my regret I sold the twinkie a couple of years ago to a Dane. I think it lives with his SW captain daughter at LNA and spends winters with him in Belize. His European airpplane is an Angel. Not too many of them around.

    Hi Charlie Melot

I sold Zephyr to LJ Warren last year having owned it for 25 years. LJ has been with the company for about 16 years running the cylinder shop and production management as well as sales. He will do well. I am living happily ever after in Punta Gorda FL. I currently own 1/4 of a very nice 172...

    0-320 leaning at altitude

Could be you are lean of peak and reducing the throttle just a bit you are going back toward peak increasing power. It is possible the butterfly is a bit over center but that should not make a difference in power. Sometimes the butterfly being backed off just a bit will result in better...

    engine disuse and resale value

What Tom said or go "all the way" pulling the lifters to inspect. The good side of what you said is the 700 SMOH. A 700 hr engine is pretty well "varnished" inside making it far less likely to rust than a new engine. OTOH I bought a brand new Lycoming engine that was stored in north Florida for...

    My engine fell out

Save the parts when it comes apart so you can see what bearing sets, rod bolts etc to order. Connecting rods may need to be modified to accept available parts. A current parts book will not show the old parts in that engine. The crankshaft probably has sludge tubes installed etc. I've seen older...

So.....would you pay extra for Nikasil cylinders?

Chrome is history! Is the $400 worth the risk when you are spending $7K or more. What engine/airplane do you have. Chrome works better on some installations than others. Charlie Melot

Norman is right. Lube the tach cables. The corrosion on the lead should be checked along the way!

    IO-320 RPM Fluctuations

Cover the tach, take off your headset and listen for the put of synch wawa souund. 20 RPM is the threshols of audability. You will not feel 20 rpm but it will move a small weight suspended on a string from the trim handle. Get past this and install a Horizon Digital tach. If it is really...
