    cockpit management

I use a yoke mounted tablet in our Arrow. Find a way to mount it low so you can see the guages.

    So, uhh... wow? Story 2

After hearing about the guy who busted the Bravo without a care I thought I should share what my DPE told me. I don't know the whole story but my DPE's ride the next day was for an instrument rated pilot who decided to fly to Canada... without telling anyone. The FAA yanked all his...

First time solo IMC - What was it like

My first IMC was about a month after punching my ticket. Three hour flight KFOD to KINL through the Minneapolis Class B. Most of the trip was IMC but got about 0.5 of actual around MSP. MSP gave us a loop over the airport and downtown. Only got to see about half of it as we were in and out of...

    How long to get IFR?

Mine took about 45 hours to complete but I had my instructor pass away in the middle of training so I had extra time to get my new CFI up to speed. If you can fly twice/week, that would be 23 weeks. If you fly 3 times/week, that would be 15 weeks. On the calendar, it took me right at 1 year but...

    Passenger Headset?

I'm sure it's been asked before but I couldn't find it. What are you guys using for passenger headsets? We have a couple DC's for pilot/copilot but I'd like to have something for those in back so they're not excluded from the conversation. I'm not looking for noise reductions and preferably on...

Seat cushions to improve vision over console

What kind of plane do you fly most? The pilot's seat in our Arrow has height adjustment. Could you use a 4" piece of memory foam?

    Great flight today

Right between the hangars or 3 rows deep in the corn field. :) I'd love to go flying this weekend but 100% chance of convection tomorrow and 50% Sunday.

    Garmin Pilot: Android vs Apple

If you have access to a computer, you can connect it and download the pictures. Good luck!!!

    Garmin Pilot: Android vs Apple

I just looked up ForeFlight and it looks like the pro-plus subscription is $200/year. That will give you geo-referenced approach plates. I have that in Garmin Pilot and would have a tough time flying IFR without it. There is no "back" button on iDevices. The older iPads/iPhones have a single...

    Garmin Pilot: Android vs Apple

Garmin Pilot was the reason I started using iDevices. Now that I use Apple products, I like them but totally understand why people would want to stick with Android. If I had it to start over, I probably would have gone the ForeFlight route on an iPad just because it's the most popular and the...

IR training: airplane vs. AATD vs. desktop sim

Airplane. To me it's totally different than a sim.

    Hidden costs of buying/owning

If you own a plane, you'll fly more which means you'll log more which means you'll need to buy more log books. It's not a big cost but it is a hidden cost.

    IR Written Before Training

Go for it. Not doing it concurrently with training it might be a little harder but when will you have more time? I used sporty's for IFR and got 88%. Then I used King for the commercial and got 88%. I think either works well.

    Tips for Taking PPL Written?

I know it's hard but don't worry. If you're passing the practice tests, you'll do fine on the real one.

    Hidden costs of buying/owning

Here's my top 10 but I could probably come up with at least 10 more 1. Avionics - you will always want more/better 2. Gizmos - Headsets, flashlights, handheld radio, iPad 3. Subscriptions - Garmin Pilot, Foreflight, etc. 4. Taxes - 5. Training - You'll fly more which means you need your IFR...

    CTAF use of callsign

"Pudunc traffic, Air Force 1, left downwind runway 24, Podunc." Seems to get everyone out of the way for me.
