Accurate performance numbers? Or just marketing?

Grumman Tiger (AA5B) book numbers are “right on the money” for my plane, 135 to 139 knots true at optimum altitude depending on conditions. I think a lot of confusion between actual performane and book performance with some aircraft is due to the propeller mounted on the engine. On the Grumman...

    After 2020.....

Those old King transponders are cheap as dirt on the used market. Garmin 327s are more expensive to replace and repair. Keep the King, buy a spare for $100, and ditch the Garmin which would bring more on the used market anyway.

    Speed Mods

The price delta between a Grumman and a Cherokee might be closer than you think when you consider the cost of all those speed mods! https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/avo/d/grumman-cheetah-aa5a-airplane/6581348703.html

    Speed Mods

The problem with speed mods and Cherokees is you are limited by the fixed pitch Propeller. Furthermore you are limited by the take-off performance the fixed pitch prop can provide, minimum static RPM and maximum engine RPM. So basically you would be souping up a car that has ONLY 2nd gear...

    First Airplane Purchase: Piper Arrow

How about a Grumman Tiger? As fast as an Arrow, great rear seat leg room, fixed gear, fixed pitch prop, low maintenance, most popular engine in general aviation, good resale value, outstanding ventilation, cheap to insure and sexy as heck! Fold down the rear seat and you have an 6 ft long...

Garmin GDL-82 --- use existing GPS antenna?

The antenna is not the problem. What I’m worried about is the tube in the KT78A, some have claimed that the GDL82 may not work as well with older, non-digital transponders. Not enough of them installed yet to be sure. Regardless, the Avionix solution seems much cleaner and simpler with little...

Want To Buy WTB small 2 seat aircraft. Specifics within

I do similar trips several times per year in a Grumman Tiger. 135 to 137 knots true at 10 to 10-1/2 gallons per hour. Great visibility, cheap operating costs, fixed gear, fixed pitch prop, within a few knots of a M20 C Mooney and with more back seat room.

Garmin GDL-82 --- use existing GPS antenna?

Thinking of the GDL82 myself but am a bit worried it won’t play nice with my King KT78A transponder. I am now crossing my fingers for this solution: https://www.uavionix.com/news/skybeacon-certification-update/ Be sure to scroll down to the bottom to see a picture of a version of the device...

    Cessna 182 vs 177

Don’t forget the C182 has 6 cylinders and a shorter TBO (than lyc powered aircraft) plus it is quite common to perform a top overhaul well before TBO. Operating expenses will likely be a bit higher on the 182 than any aircraft with a 4 cylinder lycoming and a 2000 hr TBO.. It would be...

    Non-TSO for Certified Aircraft

One of the services government provides to industry is protection from competition through onerous and confusing regulations. The FAA is particularly adept at providing “good service”.

    Cessna 182 vs 177

CG is rarely a problem. Usually only a factor when flying with seats full. Put the gents in the front and ladies in the back and usually no problem.

    Cessna 182 vs 177

My Tiger weighs 1503 lbs, gross weight is 2400 lbs. 500 lbs of people and bags means I can take off with full fuel, 51 gallons, and be almost 100 lbs under gross weight. Initial rate of clumb at sea level on a standard day at that weight is 850 ft per minute, at 6000 ft the rate of climb...

    Cessna 182 vs 177

Why not a Grumman AA5B Tiger? In your price range, as fast or faster than both the Cardinal and the C182. Lower fuel burn than the 182 and with a longer 2000 Hr TBO. I cruise at 135 to 137 Knots true and 10 to 10.5 gallons per hour. If you live in the South do not discount the luxury of a...

    My Vans RV conundrum.

Maybe a cheaper to operate certified airplane would satisfy her while giving you the reduced costs you seek. My Tiger is nearly as fast as an F or C model Mooney without the maintenance expense of retractable gear and constant speed prop. Grummans are as well known for stength as Mooneys. As...

    Tiger maintenance

There are 2 parts to TBO. Flight time and calendar time. For the Tiger it’s 2000 hours or 12 years, which ever comes first. If one is dead set on not exceeding TBO does that mean he will overhaul a mid-time engine at 12 years? For the record, I bought my Tiger 2 years ago with a 300 hours...

Looking for my first plane.. on a budget.. open to suggestions

The reason Grumma Tigers cost more is that they have the maintenance cost of a Cherokee 180 but have nearly the speed of a 180hp “C” model Mooney and with more legroom. Plus the sliding canopy makes summer ground ops and climbs to cooler altitudes much more comfortable.
