    iPad recommendations

Pictures of both set-ups shown. Only issue I ever had with overheating was when flying a piper arrow when I left the Ipad on the yoke while on the ramp.

    iPad recommendations

A couple of questions.... VFR or IFR flying? How is the 172 equipped? Most of my flying has been in a 172. Originally I was using a 9.7" ipad pro on a yoke mount. I used this for years including for my instrument training. After my plane was upgraded with a GTN 650, I changed to a ipad...

    Avionics upgrade 1200 miles away.

For me, this sounds like a good excuse for a couple of long cross-country flights. I had my avionic upgrades done the next state over so I didn't get to check in on the work. Have the shop take lots of pictures and ask plenty of questions.

Average number of Approaches at Checkride.

I had 103 approaches logged before my check ride. About 20 of those were in a simulator.

Thinking about Buying my first plane.

I've always liked the look of the Cirrus SR20's. I think the early models would come up a little short in useful load for 4 adults. While I agree that I prefer the look of low-wings, I find that high-wing Cessna's have more shoulder and head room and are more comfortable particularly in the...

ForeFlight was a crash monster yesterday!

I played on an Altair 8800 when I was younger. My first computer was a TRS/80 CoCo. Punch cards were no longer in use when I joined the industry. All of which would never fit into my Skyhawk.

    Garmin GI 275 EIS

Has anyone installed the Garmin GI 275 Engine Indication System yet? Does this provide tach time? Or just flight and engine run time? Any information about this instrument would be appreciated. Thanks.

First time solo IMC - What was it like

I completed my IFR check ride on a Tuesday in July, 2018. That Friday I was flying from NJ to OSH with a stop in Frederick MD. I had a couple of passengers but no autopilot. Also no GPS. I flew several legs over two days in IFR. The longest was three hours in the clouds from Mansfield, OH to...

Buying first plane or the 2nd plane?

Flying out of KCDW by any chance?

Buying first plane or the 2nd plane?

Correct. Air Plains STC. Increased max gross to 2,550 lbs. Empty weight is 1,445, I only have 40 gallons of fuel leaving me with 865 lbs. full fuel load. Not bad for a Skyhawk.

Buying first plane or the 2nd plane?

I have a 172N with 180 hp. I love the load capacity (1100+ lbs), and it has decent speed (115-120 knots). I think the range will a little short for what you're looking for.

    Garmin GFC 500

I did basically the same upgrade to my 172N with the exception of the GTN650 instead of the GTN 650Xi and I did install the pitch trim servo. I love the autopilot. It's very intuitive to use. Plane flies like it's on rails and approaches are very easy.

Another "What plane to buy" thread

Sounds like a C182 or an older C172 with a 180 HP upgrade. I have a 1977 C172N with an Airplaines 180 HP conversion with standard 40 gallon tanks. I have a 3+ hour cruise with IFR reserves. With full fuel, I have a 860 lbs payload capacity.

    iPad Stylus/Pencil in the Cockpit?

I started using an Apple pencil on a Ipad pro 9.7 on a yoke mount for IFR clearances. I eventually switched to a pen and paper on a kneeboard. I like to copy frequencies, altitudes and headings and too often I couldn't switch the ipad to the notepad.

    GTN650, G5’s, GNC255 upgrade

My new GNC 255A works perfectly with the old KI 209 CDI.

    GTN650, G5’s, GNC255 upgrade

I prefer to have the completely redundant nav.

    GTN650, G5’s, GNC255 upgrade

I upgraded to the exact same set-up last year. Do you have an existing CDI that you can reuse with the GNC 255 to save cost?

    Nav lights

I had the same problem in a 1977 Skyhawk. The problem was resolved when I replaced the circuit breaker.
