    Opinions on planned avionics upgrades/changes

Some reasons - Noise can be an issue. Some cigarette lighter adapters won't produce enough power to keep a large tablet charged. I like having the power on the pilot's side so there are less wires stretching across the cockpit. Compared to the cost of the avionics upgrades, this will be...

While doing all this work, you should install some USB ports.

    Opinions on planned avionics upgrades/changes

How much hard IFR do you expect to be doing? I have a GTN 650, dual G5's, GTX 345 and GMA 345. I also have a GNC 255 that was connected to my existing CDI. I like that I can fly all approaches using the GTN 650 which is connected to the autopilot. If necessary, Nav2 is completely...

First Solo XC On the Books!

Not too long ago after programming the GPS on the ground with a rather long IFR clearance, I accidently turned off the avionics master and had to program the clearance all over again. After that, I learned that once i finish programming the GPS, I store the flight plan incase I repeat my mistake.

    G5's, GTN650 and GFC500

Correct. Mainly when you are performing a VOR approach. When doing a LOC or ILS, there is no need to "turn" the OBS.

First Solo XC On the Books!

Congratulations! I'm sure you have already realized that you should get as much as possible set up on the ground, including radios and GPS. Keep us posted on the rest of your XC's.

    G5's, GTN650 and GFC500

You have to make sure the CDI is set to VLOC. Then on the HSI: 1 - Press the knob in to bring up the menu 2 - Turn the knob to select "Course" 3 - Turn the knob to adjust the course To me, it's awkward in flight. When I'm hand-flying, I typically use my second nav (GNC255 connected to a King...

    G5's, GTN650 and GFC500

I have a similar stack in my plane. About the most complicated thing to enter in the GTN650 is a non-standard hold. With a little practice on the trainer, it can easily be mastered. G5's are very simple to use. The only complicated thing is setting the OBS. You should also learn how the...

    Welp It’s Time...

Hopefully Lycoming has resolved their issues from last year. I had to replace a O-360-A4M in 2019. The order also went through AirPower. I was originally quoted 10 weeks. The engine was finally delivered after about 18 weeks and that was only after meeting with a Lycoming Vice President.

    Is a GTN650+G5 a TAA?

You would be using the PFD page on the G5 and moving map page on the GTN650. I don't see anything in the requirement that specifies that altitude/airspeed on the display need to be primary. Just that they need to be on the display.

    Is a GTN650+G5 a TAA?

I know I'm digging up an old thread. Why would a second G5 be needed? The G5 on the PFD page contains: Airspeed Turn Coordinator Attitude Indicator Heading Indicator Altimeter Vertical Speed Indicator This combined with a GTN650 on the moving map page and a 2-axis autopilot should qualify as...

    GFC 500 issues

I had a roll servo fail on a 172 after about 50 flight hours after install. The autopilot was probably used for less than 25% of the time. It was replaced under warrantee and the tech took about 3 hours to replace the servo. There has been about 100 flight hours since with no issues.

    172 vs 177 vs 182

I also have a 172N with 180 hp. The majority of my time is in 172's, but I've spent some time in PA-28's (Warriors, Archers and about 25 hours last year in an Arrow). I always felt that the PA-28's seemed to be a little more stable. However, the Cessna's are roomier, and cooler on hot, sunny...

    Redundancy by hand-held for TAA?

While I'm not flying something as elaborate, I believe in having backup's for my backup's. In my panel I have dual G5's, a GTN650, GTX345 ADSB in-out transponder, and a second nav/com. I also have a Ipad mini on the windshield. In my bag, I have a handheld com radio, a Ipad pro, a USB power...

    IFR Training - no motivation.....

I started my instrument work about 15 years after getting my private license. There were several starts and stops and finally after 10 years, I finished my Instrument Rating. Too often, I had to cancel or delay trips because of MVFR or instrument conditions. Also, I finally decided that I...

    2nd NAV options?

The GTN 650 displays on the G5. I kept my existing KI 209 indicator for the GNC 255. I absolutely love the G5. However, it is far simpler to set your radials on the KI 209 than it is on the G5. If you're using your second NAV to identify waypoints on a VOR or ILS approach, it's easier to use...

    2nd NAV options?

I wasn't exactly budget friendly. I swapped out dual KX155's for a GTN650 and a GNC255a along with dual G5's. I have great redundancy and also eliminated the vacuum system.

It's not rust. Just discolored. If it was rust, I would have replaced it.
