    Pellet Grills

I suppose that the pellet grill's real purpose is low-and-slow smoking, and that ideally it should be supplemented with a charcoal or propane grill as some others have mentioned. I've also heard that they don't smoke as well as other methods (more mild flavor, which is fine for us). It appears...

    Pellet Grills

Are these an enduring, "better" way to grill, or just a passing fad? What is the operating cost vs. propane? We have a 20 year old Weber Genesis propane grill which has served us well and still works. Though I have a preference for the "added value" of charcoal, the wife wanted convenience...

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

My Flowroute bill is ~$20 every 2-3 months; Amazon Lightsail ~$5/month. We don't make or receive a many calls, so I don't follow the SIP charges that closely, but they've definitely gone up over time. I do get a ton of telemarketers, but I just never answer. When I was running Asterisk, I had...

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

Thanks. I was able to get MagicJack stable, and voice quality certainly seems acceptable but not quite as good as my 3CX/ATA/Flowroute setup. Faxing in particular appears to be very unreliable over MagicJack, but only on rare occasions do I have to fax.

    Total Wireless / Verizon MVNO

Any particular reason why you left them? And was it a pain to port your number in to Total Wireless, or port out?

    Total Wireless / Verizon MVNO

Yeah, just learned of the TracFone ownership. I had one experience with TracFone a couple years ago, and it wasn't good. However, AT&T's post-paid customer service has really gone downhill. I am nervous about service quality from MVNOs, as well as the fact that some appear to throttle and...

    Total Wireless / Verizon MVNO

Does anyone use Total Wireless? I *think* they're a Verizon MVNO. They appear to have some fairly decent plans, as we are looking to escape ATT post-paid due to escalating cost and the kids getting older and needing active mobile service on their phones. I use my line primarily for business, I...

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

Ooma seems like a good alternative as well. What is the monthly cost (assuming that you don't have "premium" services? I'm not set against MagicJack; still testing it. It (like Ooma) seems to get fairly good reviews, assuming that folks can get it working and don't need tech support.

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

That is the process I'm familiar with from the past, but honestly, seems like way too much time and effort when there are other services available. And I'd prefer Google not have access to my call records and voice mails.

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

Aside from my strong dislike of Google, the biggest problem with GV in the past was porting the number, as it is a land line number and GV would only let you port in mobile numbers. Has that changed?

    MagicJack & Alternatives: Part 2

I couple years ago, I asked about experiences with MagicJack. Just checking in with folks to see if anything has changed. When we're home, we will usually pick up the home phone for outbound calls, but we keep the number mainly to give out to people who ask for a number but to whom we do not...

Curious about the new MacBook's with the M1 chip

What other consumer company does onsite repairs and data recovery? The enterprise customer is not Apple’s target customer, but Apple does have enterprise support agreements which will get you advance-replacement systems. As far as I know, that is a support model similar to other companies. As...

Curious about the new MacBook's with the M1 chip

Apple tends to support their hardware far better than other manufacturers these days, and ARM-based Macs are the future for them. I bought a MacBook Pro 16 a year ago, and while it is a fine machine, the Intel i7 (9th Gen) and the GPU cause the fans to spin (and the battery to drain more...

    Cloud Encryption

That's why I'm looking for a solution which works well, is relatively user-friendly, and integrates with multiple platforms.

    Cloud Encryption

There are plenty of ways to create an encrypted archive on your computer, but unless files are encrypted and stored individually, those solutions really aren't suitable for cloud storage synchronization. When individual files change, you don't want to resync the entire archive to the cloud...

    Cloud Encryption

Storing data in the cloud is certainly a better thing for convenience; it is not necessarily a better thing for security or privacy. Many cloud providers offer decent multi-factor authentication for account security and will encrypt data in transit and at rest, but they control the encryption...

    Cloud Encryption

Does anyone have experience with Boxcryptor or Cryptomator? I’m specifically looking for a solution which will permit local zero-knowledge encryption, syncing with a cloud service (such as iCloud or ObeDrive), and works across mobile and desktop OS. Both of the products above claim to do all...

    Streaming TV Devices

AirPlay is a big plus for AppleTV—I know that there are Android TV apps for this, but judging by the reviews, they don’t work all that well. I probably should get something, because I have congenital hearing loss and have to turn the volume up louder than it needs to be in order to understand...
