Military pilots, looking for info for my son

Man, I wish I had joined THAT Air Force... The Navy Shapshot (apart from the flying off boats part) sounds exactly like my 21 years in the USAF.

Military pilots, looking for info for my son

I just retired from 21 years of flying F-15C's for the USAF. PM me if you or he have specific questions. Google is your friend here - have him go to flyingsquadron.com/forums and start reading (not asking questions first; just read) they have asked and answered almost every question on...

    Now onto motorcycle navigation.

I use a mix. I have the built in Garmin as well, I also use my phone and real maps. The best laid plans often get changed by mother nature; flexibility is definitely key to any bike trip. As the others have said, it all depends on how, what and why you ride. In general a phone works pretty...

Jets really don’t like flying low...

I never flew the whale but in the 757, 767 and the 330 we take off heavy and can't get to "top of climb" but the FMS continually calculates optimum altitude based on a myriad of factors including total weight. Typically it'll have us starting in the mid-low 30's and be above 40k by the time we...

Jets really don’t like flying low...

Here here, we never burn less than 800# in the 330 for taxi. Normally it's more like 1400#. In the F-15 we planned on min #2000 fuel burn to get through gear up.

Jets really don’t like flying low...

Some of them do... it just depends on who's paying the gas bill. ;)

    Retirement Thoughts: Boise Idaho Area?

We just bought a place in Meridian (west side of Boise); been planning to move back for years and 2021 is finally the time. The housing market here is absolutely insane. The houses we looked at were going up $30k/month and selling faster than you could get an offer in. Hangar space is...

    Gatlinburg questions

I'd plan ahead for a taxi unless you have some time to spare. Uber/Lyft may be an option too. The airport is in Sevierville, TN; at least 45 mins to G-burg this time of year unless you hit absolutely zero traffic. If you are coming in from the southeast and fly down Wear's Valley (the one...

    F35 approach

You're right, that's hilarious!!! I think it's funny that all the "in the know" keyboard warriors are so quick to correct me that "it's called the Viper by the guys who fly it dumb@$$" but then think that humor between the actual fighter pilots is beneath them. Ahhh..... interwebs...

    F35 approach

Yes I'm aware. The name of the jet is still the FF. Nah, the Hog is the Hog. Mostly because if you remind the FF drivers of their jet's name they get spun up about it, if you call the Hog the TB2, the Hog drivers look at you like you are a moron. :D Just because they call it "Viper"...

    F35 approach

Like a Dodge Viper? Or are you referring to a fighting falcon? :D (can't rename your plane just because it's cool)

    F35 approach

We always have names for the other fighters. The 16 is the lawn dart, the 35 is the battle penguin; or most USAF pilots call it 'Fat Amy'. 'Shining your ass' is showing off.

    F35 approach

USAF overhead is "supposed" to terminate at 1 mile and 300'. If the penguin drivers are shorting it they are shining their ass or screwing up. Your 1) describes the pattern for all fighters in VFR conditions (from an overhead) The single engine guys also have to do SFO patterns from hi key...

    Commercial cross country requirements

Maybe so. Although if it's as bad as you guys are making it out to be, I don't really see any upside to doing that.

    Commercial cross country requirements

I'm not saying they don't need to do XC's. You DEF need that skillset. It's just the solo part (that we've beaten to death) that irks me (in some situations).

    Commercial cross country requirements

That's an interesting point; we have to have a structure (rules) for required tasks in order to get a new certificate. I think we can all agree on that. Maybe it's my bias from so much solo time. I admit, being solo makes absolutely zero difference to me personally. I usually feel like an...

    Commercial cross country requirements

Man, you guys must be a blast at parties.... :D So what you are saying is that he/she can be trusted to declare they are solo (where he/she could lie about it) but can't be trusted to determine the kind of passenger they have along with them because they could lie about it? C'mon man...

    Commercial cross country requirements

sigh.... It will require 1 regulation. The pilot should use judgement to determine if any passengers were assisting to the point of it not being a "solo" flight. (or something similar) Again, I'm suggesting that the FAA should let pilots use JUDGEMENT (which is a requirement to be a pilot) to...

    Commercial cross country requirements

No worries, I have pretty thick skin. I don't get upset about stuff on message boards. :)
