    Takeoff decision point

For piston engine aircraft POH numbers are are to be taken with several shakers of salt. If you are flying a practically brand new airplane, using a dry level paved runway, in good weather, in weight and cg limits, with good technique, and there are no obstacles limiting your path you have a...

Why did larger airliners move away from tail mounted engines?

Interesting to see how trends form and evolve especially in aviation. For a long time flying boats were the way to go before there were many airports. The Brits insisted pilot's need to feel the air in their face. Engines under wing versus on the tail...2 v 3 v 4 engines. Interesting stuff...

picking an instructor to work with for rental checkout and rusty pilot BFR

Good suggestions! Ask other pilots for recommendations. Also pay attention to pre and post flight briefings and the CFI's overall approach. Are they professional, thorough, or haphazard. Evaluate them as you would any other professional (doctor, lawyer, etc.).

Something of a space nerd here. Sounds like museum at KHUT will take a full day. Sounds like KLBL is at least a half day or a separate trip. Everyone thanks for the info! I'll post plans as they unfold, anyone interested in sharing a ride from KAPA or meeting at either location? Probably...

    Takeoff minimums, are you sure?

Don't use this procedure unless you can meet or exceed the required gradient to 1,300 feet. After that usual gradient 200 ft/nm) applies. Maintain 165 until 1,400. There is something in the way that makes this the safest course of action. Remember this is based on ground speed, at 90 kt...

    MOA airspace

KROW is a good stop or was several years ago. Restaurant had good food and there was always interesting traffic. Tons of F-117s, C-5s and 777s doing touch and goes never knew what you were going to see! If you RON try to allow some time to people watch at the UFO museum. Taxi service was a...

FAA seems to encourage self weather/pre flight briefings

There are bunches of ways to gather information. I miss being able to talk with an informed briefer who is familiar with local conditions and trends, especially when things are iffy. In 121 you could always mull things over with your dispatcher. Part 91 it would be great to have something...

    Torn retina anyone?

Chuck thanks for the info and good words. Good news from the retina doc, left side has improved enough that he cleared me for cataract surgery. In addition to fixing the cataracts they are going to correct severe near nearsightedness. Looking forward to no more glasses or contacts except for...

Has any passenger landed commercial airliner?

Back to the thread don't believe so, but who is to say? oc H or some of you airline grey beards ever hear of this? Circa 1977 in the Navy there was a rumor about a student landing a T-2 after the instructor was incapacitated. Also heard the student was thrown out of training for disobeying...

    Torn retina anyone?

Do you mind talking about what caused your bubbles? I am diabetic and have bubbles in my left retina which, until they shrink or go away, are delaying surgery to correct nearsighted and cataracts. Hope the retina doc will have good news tomorrow and we can get on with things. Good luck and...
