Getting back into it (IFR advice)

I understand. I was just referring to the practical aspects of IFR confidence building. A big source of trepidation to many pilots is just not being comfortable in the IFR environment because most IR training just focuses on the IMC aspects without spending much time on actual IFR flight...

Can I get hired at a regional with only GA hours?

I know a controller who retired and went to work for a regional. He went the business jet route first. Just a suggestion, but if your goal is to fly jets commercially I think you'd be happier doing contract work in bizjets. Since you will be assured of a basic income you'll be under no...

Can I get hired at a regional with only GA hours?

Flight Check requires 500 hours of multi before they will even look at you. Harder to get a job there than a regional.

How often does your GPS fail?

I’ve never seen it in my GNC 300xl in almost 20 years of operation. That’s not to say it can’t happen in some areas due to radio interference. If it happens you should report it to the nearest ATC facility or preferably FSS as they will better know how to handle the report. If enough complaints...

    Airnav's "operations per day"

Some insurance companies have rules and/or discounts about operating commercial flights out of towered airports. All things being equal a towered field will attract more commercial operations.

What causes squelch break on some frequencies and not others?

More pilots and controllers keying their radios on the same frequency in relatively close proximity.

Joined the league of temporary airmen

I got a chuckle out of “the league of temporary airmen”, and then realized I’m in the same boat while I’m waiting on the plastic. Never thought about being in a club.

Getting back into it (IFR advice)

Your situation is far from unique. Lots of folks get the rating and fall out of currency 6 months later never to return. It’s difficult for someone who isn’t a working commercial pilot to stay IFR proficient, and by proficient I don’t mean just the legal requirements. One tip is to fly IFR to...

    Lost logbook. What to do?

IACRA is an official record and will help with a lost logbook, but it relies on you putting all the information in the fields when you get a new rating. Every rating I get I try to fill out as many fields as I can for just that reason.

First time flying with backseat passenger - Piper Arrow - Tips Needed

With some planes that are underpowered there is a dramatic difference between a lighter load and more forward CG as opposed to the opposite. I wouldn’t expect this to be the case with your plane, but I have no time in them. When in doubt consult your POH and fly the plane as the manufacturer...

Are Garmin GNC300XL or GPS155XL usable?

Have one in the 182 and it’s been there since they were new. Still use it for IFR. One problem is Garmin no longer supports them, so there is no factory service if you have a problem. The display is the weak spot, at least in mine as I’m on the third one.
