    The phrase "With You"

I used to say "with you" when I'd first check in with a new controller. After reading this thread (months ago) I started thinking more carefully about what I say. It depends mostly on how busy the frequency is. I've adopted the format I hear most often, which is "Who I'm calling" - "Who I am"...

Using the word "traffic" at the end of approach and landing call outs

What bugs me is describing your color and type instead of using your call sign, especially at a relatively busy uncontrolled field. What the hell are people trying to do? You hiding from the man? There's a reason we're supposed to use our tail number. It's a unique identifier so that there is no...

My first (and hopefully last) "possible pilot deviation"

Not trying to resurrect this thread, but I though I'd post a follow up report. Seven months after the incident, I got a call from a very nice Aviation Safety Inspector from the Juneau Flight Standards District Office. Not being as busy, he apparently inherited a lot of California's cases. I...

My first encounter with icing (long).

Ditto: I expect I would've done exactly the same, and for the same reasons. Thanks to you, I'll know better if it happens to me.

    AUTOPILOT!!!

I love my AP and wouldn't fly IMC without it. I don't rely on it, but rather I use it for times when my attention needs to be on other things, and dividing it too many ways increases the risk of losing track of something. I tend to hand fly from takeoff to about 3k agl, then use the autopilot...

    Feeling a little apprehensive

So, we moved to Fairview TX a month ago, and I flew my plane from my old home drome in central CA to TKI. It was a pretty easy trip, really. Now I've been here a month, and I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about going up, despite 600 hrs PPL, 100 of it with IR. (But only 10 hrs IMC) I've flown...

I'm French and I'll come to USA

I'd say cost-of-living and job-market are the two most important things to look for on arrival, with cost/availability of flight training in the area as a close second. Heck, if I were that age with $15k in my pocket, I'd find a minimum wage job and the cheapest studio apartment I could find and...

    Ratchet Straps for Tie Down?

I just started keeping my plane outside (TKI) for the first time since I've had her. I'm using both the chains that are there, and the non-ratcheting cinch-tight straps from HD. Probably overkill, but...

    What's Your Job Like?

I write SciFi novels. I get up when I want, usually around 8 or 9. Coffee, breakfast, then sit in a recliner for for 3-4 hrs (taking a ten minute break every hour) and write. In the afternoons, I play golf, or I fly, or I play ice hockey. After dinner, I go for a walk with my wife, or play...

    Impossible turn practice at 500ft

My instructor did this to me. And without warning. However, it was at 700ft, non-towered airport with two runways, so I had a second runway that I could make if I couldn't make it back to the one I had left from, and it was a calm day with no traffic about. (Also in a wide open flat area, with...

Looking for advice from the community on how to move forward with training

At only 600 hrs and holding only a PPL/IR, I'm not as qualified to advise you as most on this site, but I did buy my plane about halfway through my PPL training, so I have a bit of experience with training in rentals vs your own plane. First, if you think you're going to save money buying a...

    Logging an approach

So, I can maintain IR currency by shooting approaches, by myself, on moonless nights, in VMC? Even if I'm flying over a populated area with lots of lights below? So, if I did this on a regular basis, I'd be current? (Current, not proficient.)

Slippers (no, not forward or side)

I wear white socks. My wife checks the bottom of them regularly to determine when it's time to clean the floors.

    Ramp fee's GA

While I'd love for everything to be free, I don't really have a problem being charged a fee to use someone's ramp, or to land at someone's airport. How else is the runway going to remain in good condition so that I can land? How else is an FBO going to remain in business so they can provide the...

enjoy life as VRF pilot for sometime or start IFR right away?

When I got my PPL, I was all about waiting for a while before getting my IR. A couple of brief inadvertent encounters with IMC changed my tune. I wish I would have done it earlier, as I truly enjoy the utility of the IR. I don't understand why some people are acting like getting your instrument...

So she's now an outdoor girl.

So I moved my plane from a hangar at KSCK in Stockton CA, to a tiedown spot at KTKI in McKinney TX. For the first time since I bought her, my 98 Archer III is an outdoor girl. I have cowl plugs (with the little flags) and an old but still usable canopy cover. (Tiedowns are chains here, BTW.)...

    Relocated the plane to Texas!

After getting all our possessions to our new home in Fairview, I flew back to Stockton CA to pickup my plane. (N9294Q) Departed Stockton Sunday morning around 0630 and flew to Lancaster (KWJF), then Blythe (KBLH) and then Tucson (KTUS). Millionair in Tucson got me a hotel room and rental car...

Complete 180 on laptops in checked baggage

Per AA baggage rules, I remove the battery from my laptop, leave the laptop in my checked bag, and carry the battery in my carry-on. That's fine with me as I never use my laptop in flight.
