5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I think it's important to clarify this misunderstanding. Going up to practice (which I do quite frequently) is not the same thing as launching with a plane full of people into low vis for a lunch flight, when one could wait a couple hours and drastically reduce the risk exposure. And I do launch...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I'm not sure you understood my meaning. Obviously, the pilot's abilities and the aircraft's capabilities are factors to consider when making a go/no-go decision. But neither justifies taking on the additional risk purely for recreational purposes, especially when there are four other family...

I kick my cats... hard and I'm not even sorry anymore

Our last cat was very stupid. Probably why it only took 2.5 years for him to get killed by a car. He was constantly under foot, sometimes even lying in wait to ambush your ankles as you passed. My daughter's cat is pretty smart though, and never gets under our feet.

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I have absolutely neither time nor training in twins. (Although I eventually hope to.) However, I find some of the arguments supporting this pilot's decision to launch somewhat flawed. (IMHO) I feel that as a private pilot, my instrument certification is best used as protection for me and my...

    Foreflight changes

I generally fly with full tanks. (Not always, but usually.) Personally, I'd rather tanker the extra fuel and have more options, than try to squeeze out an extra knot/penny or two. Of course, I only fly a little Archer, and most of my legs are no more than two hours. (One, if my wife is on...

life insurance for pilots - worth it?

I bought a ten-year term life policy that does not exclude flying. The coverage is for $1m. I chose the ten-year term, because by that time I expect to have written enough to guarantee a livable income for my wife should I pass. When the ten-year term is up, I will consider my needs again. I...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

With all due respect to the dearly departed, I'm in the camp of "the pilot was stupid". Legal vs safe" is the same thing as "current vs "proficient". IMHO, any takeoff into conditions that are so poor that you could not turn around and land is a foolish and unnecessary risk. (Unless of course...

    IFR MEA Question

The way I was taught to view it was that you are on an IFR flight plan so that "if" you lose comms, you can continue your flight according to your clearance and the charts. As long as you are in communication with ATC, it's "mother may I". "When you lose comms, that's when the MEA comes into play.

Here is potentially why GA is doomed

My two cents, which I'm sure no one will agree with. General Aviation will survive, but not in a way any of us will recognize. (Or approve of.) What kills it (along with the economy, of course) is the cost and the FAA. The FAA over-regulates private GA, thus driving the cost of equipment up, and...

Here is potentially why GA is doomed

Not trying to start an argument here, but I can tell why I fly less now than last year. It's the 40% increase in my health insurance costs. If it keeps going up, and my revenue doesn't, I'll end up selling my plane and building a sim.

life insurance for pilots - worth it?

I got mine through piclife. Same amount of coverage, but I'm paying four times as much. Probably cuz I'm a fat old man with high blood pressure. I didn't get it because I'm flying, I got it to protect my family. Mine policy is through MetLife, which is now Brighthouse.

    Flu shot? shingles

I'm sorry, but you're flat wrong. You can't immunize a herd using a guess at which strain it will be. I've got a bit of professional experience and training in this area as well. And I can read educational resources just as well as you can. I also know how to tell when those resources are skewed...

    Flu shot? shingles

OMG! Influenza isn't fatal. If you think it is you need to do a little googling. Complications from influenza can be deadly, and certain persons in certain age groups, and with certain medical conditions are more likely to develop complications. For normal, otherwise healthy individuals who are...

    Turbo 206 no logs

Pretty simple if you ask me. Get a good A/P and take a little trip. If it looks good, and you can afford a loss if it turns out to be a lemon, buy it. If you can't afford the loss, walk away. Either way, you're going to lose the cost of the trip and the A/Ps time. As was mentioned up thread...

    Flu shot? shingles

Unless you're in a risk category for dying from the flu, it's a waste. They are always just guessing at which strain it's going to be anyway, and if you look at the number of different strains, well, your odds in Vegas are probably better. I think it's just another scheme by big pharma to pull...

Buying an airplane out of state -- tax question

Bought my plane in CA, and resided in CA at the time. Paid $80k for the plane, and $8k in sales tax, then $800 per year to the state as my penalty for having the nerve to own a plane, as well as another $1,200 to the county for likely the same reason. It's one of the reasons I moved out of CA...

Using the word "traffic" at the end of approach and landing call outs

"Traffic" at the end doesn't bother me. It's wholly unnecessary, but it doesn't bother me. It's just another one of those things that is handed down through generations of CFIs, most of who where teaching others to fly with only the minimum hours and training to legally do so, and didn't really...
