Super Bowl 2018- Who are we going for?

If it ain't hockey, I don't care. Yeah, I know I moved to the wrong state.

Why do pilots push fuel endurance....

Sorry, poor wording on my part. I meant that I try never to launch onto any leg of a journey with anything less than full tanks. It doesn't matter if my destination is 30 minutes, or two hours. And I never load my plane with bodies or baggage that won't allow me to launch with full tanks...

Why do pilots push fuel endurance....

I follow the same rules as with my vehicles. 1. Don't drive anywhere that you can't get there and back on a single tank of gas. 2. Never let you tank get below half. I don't fly a leg unless I can do it with full tanks at takeoff. If that puts me overweight, then someone or something is getting...

    New PA28 AD

Okay, so my Archer's serial number is in the AD, and my plane was made in 98. Is it even humanly possible for a plane to be flown for 20 years, by 4 different owners, and not one of them would notice that the tank selector was backwards? (It's not, by the way.) This AD really should get an...

    Private Pilot Training Question

I used an online course from Jepp. (Which I wouldn't recommend, BTW.) I did it all before I started flight training, just to familiarize myself with the content. Then I went through it again during training, taking my written about halfway through my flight training. I felt like going through...

    Plane of your choice

Gulfstream, any model. Then I'd sell it and buy a C340A, spiff it up, and still have enough money left over to fund flying it forever.

    Question about school

While I agree that flying 2-3 times per week is a better idea than a few times per month, I would add a twist that I found worked well for me. I flew 3 times per week throughout my training, but once I soloed, I only flew with the instructor on the middle day. For example, if my lesson was on...

Pay off house or invest the $ ?

Take the sure thing and pay off the house. If you're in a hot real estate market, after paying off the house, save that mortgage payment for a couple years and then invest in a rental, or buy something and flip it. At least then you have some control over the risk. Our plane is paid for, and in...

    New to colder temps

Thanks for the replies. Follow up question: If the plane spent 48 hrs in (barely) freezing temps, how long does it need to be in above 40f before I no longer need to worry about preheating? I really don't want to invest in gear to preheat if this kind of cold snap is not customary for this area...

Just curious on your opinion ... what next after PPL?

Without a doubt, Instrument. You think you'll never find yourself in IMC, but you do. And it just makes you a better pilot all around. Better to be ready.

    New to colder temps

So, I must moved from CA to TX, and apparently we're having an unusually cold spell here. The nights are dropping to -1 to -9, and the last couple days the temps didn't get any higher than -2 all day. Warmer days are coming, maybe 5c to 12c. My question is: I arrived with 15w50 in my bird...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

Not asking the government to protect me from myself. I can protect myself just fine, thanks. I'm asking that the government be consistent in their need to, and their application of, regulations that they believe are protecting us. Apparently, you can't tell the difference. And, I could care...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

While I may be comfortable performing a 0/0 takeoff, and be quite capable of doing so safely, I am not comfortable in doing so if the mission doesn't warrant the additional risk. At 0/0 IS additional risk, as it complicates dealing with any of the multitude of things that can go wrong in the...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

Not asking them to keep me safe. I'm asking them to make sense and follow a reasonable pattern across the board. Sorry that concept is too complex for you.

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

So, it's because they are trying not to over-regulate? The FAA? Seriously? The problem isn't over-regulation, it's dumb stuff like this. This is under-regulation. Regulations need to make sense. Allowing 0/0 takes offs by private pilots makes no sense.

Private pilot, 3rd class medical: pending dui

I absolutely have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. As a medic, too often I witness the destruction they caused. However, the laws have to be fair and sensible, and they are not. The guy sleeping it off listening to his radio is not fair. (It should require the engine on to be considered a dui.)...

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

Are you inferring that that makes it okay to do so, with a plane full of people, to go to lunch? Seriously?

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I really wish someone could explain to me why Part 91 operators are allowed to takeoff in 0/0. I've never understood it, and feel the same as you.

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

Perhaps I should have said "any private pilot." I just thought that was understood here, since we are speaking about a private pilot. Using airlines here isn't really a valid comparison. First of all, they can't launch in 0/0. Second, they are equipped and trained to land Cat III conditions...
