    First aviation headset- choice?

I just can't bring myself to be a Bose fanboy, I just feel like I'm supporting the man. haha I use DC One-X and love them! Bose ANR is slightly quieter but I find the DCs way more comfortable.

    Autopilot usage an Instrument Checkride

Took my instrument checkride in my RV in July. DPE let me use autopilot almost the whole time. Only requirement is to demonstrate one hand flown non-precision if my memory serves. Also had to do some hand flying for obvious things like unusual attitude. DPE said most people fail that...

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

Thanks Brian! I'll try and update that thread when she is all finished up. Haven't done anything to the wings yet. lol

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

I have personal mins but it's mostly for unexpected weather changes and even more so for the fact I'm flying a single. If I have an engine failure I want to have somewhat of a fighting chance. I would not depart and fly in 200 foot ceilings if I was in an area with heavy terrain; wide open...

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

Nicely said, amazing how quickly proficiency can diminish in the IFR world. I too fly approaches even if the weather is good and I can't log it just to stay sharp. Between the autopilot and and GPS there is a fair amount of button pushing going on. Of course hand flying them sometimes is...

Garmin GNS 750 vs Avidyne IFD 540

Ya I would love to put in the FlightStream but have too many other things I want to buy for the plane, I guess I'll just keep my fat fingers sharp! haha

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

So there I was wanting to fly some commercial maneuvers with my CFII but the weather was unusual for where I live; time to do some instrument flying instead. Got the ticket back in June and really enjoy flying in the system whenever I can. Today the ceiling at our destination KGEY was...

Passed the IFR written test today!!!

Congrats! $300 back in 2005 and I just paid $600 for my instrument a couple months ago. Really enjoyed flying with that DPE too. Going to use him for my commercial next which is the same fee.

Garmin GNS 750 vs Avidyne IFD 540

The 430 units seem half way logical once you get used to them. The thing that drives me crazy is not being able to enter airways and how long it takes to enter letters. I was flying to Vegas last week and got a reroute 3 times; I felt like all I was doing was entering stuff into the GPS that...

    Man up or not?

Always has been in my opinion. Renting is all fun and games until 6 people all want the same aircraft for Christmas break. lol

    Slick Mag Alert

Agree, Slick would be done for if Pmag was in the certified game.

    Weekend Instrument ground school, thoughts?

I'm an educator (high school math and shop) and I recently got my IR. Some people respond well to cram session type learning but almost all people will have some form of significant memory loss in the long term. There is an unbelievable amount of information one must know for the IR. My...

    Slick Mag Alert

Ah yes, the good ole slick mag... Story time There I was pre-oiling my brand new Lycoming on my -7A I was finishing. I felt hard clicks/breaks and knew immediately something was wrong with the impulse coupler. Pawl corners just sheared right off. Sent the mag in to the builder, "these...

I just paid $700 for a tire change

+1 Although I still can't believe what a new tire and tube costs even to change it myself on my -7A...

    Man up or not?

Do you have a storage location in mind if you went option 3? That seems to be a deal breaker for a lot of people these days. Owning your own aircraft sure is awesome at times but you will be surprised how often you are still flying by yourself (I'm 34 and 2 kids, so somewhat similar). If you...

Another post about how awesome it is to be instrument rated..

Another thing that makes the instrument so magical is its usefulness for getting into complicated airspace. If I fly into Charlie or a bravo veil I’m filing. Recently got my instrument too and it’s so awesome to bust into complicated airspace like it’s not even there.
