VFR Pilots on Flight Following, for the Love of God...

If you're zipping along in a 172 at 4500 because you really can't comfortably climb much higher easily - then you're not going to see it! I know I know - its not that hard to get to 6500 in a 172. . . but to comfortably go over any of these mountains with 4000' peaks you're gonna want to be...

VFR Pilots on Flight Following, for the Love of God...

@eetrojan - its right where the 'CTC SBA Approach" box is - there is a narrow gap there that only goes up to 4500 or so - you can easily slip through at 5500 and above -

iPad v. iPad mini for flight?

I got an Ipad Pro this year [9.7"]. Its too damn big. Apple has basically discontinued the Mini - and has zero announced plans to upgrade it - so eventually - a couple years - FF will make the program too resource intensive for the Mini to easily handle - this forcing everyone to use either a...

    panic attack marked inactive

    1. The Rx question is what you are presenting taking. 2. have you had a panic attack? 3. What did the doc put down as a Dx or reason for the consult that day? 4. Do NOT volunteer information. If the FAA asks you about a dx of sleep apena 20 years ago and you no longer have it - and they...

VFR Pilots on Flight Following, for the Love of God...

@Shawn - its always easier to actually know what you are doing and TELL ATC what you are doing, right? Esp here in Calif. Know what you're doing solves a lot of problems. Like moi I'm sure you get asked all the time what alt you want - its good to know that information! I NEVER notify ATC...

VFR Pilots on Flight Following, for the Love of God...

Flew from POC to SBP a week or so ago - ATC wanted to know my route of flight - they did not want to know my actual route - they simply wanted to know how I going to navigate the turn - you can slip inland in the gap between Ventura and Santa Ynez, or you can take the route over San Marcus VOR...

an airman's personal statement and events of his DUI

Until you know your rights in the state you live in - you don't say or do anything. Hello Sir, I pulled you over because I saw you go over the yellow line back there - have you been drinking tonight? "Officer, I respectfully refuse to answer any investigatory questions on my fifth amendment...

Crash this AM at SEE, 2 fatalities

@denverpilot - for one thing, in a stall you're going over the ground a lot slower than you would in a nonstalled controlled descent - so you will remain over the runway a lot longer as well - Its a tool in the box - works for short runways in the back country.

of course - you actually need an ILS signal to follow down - ott - it was a great idea.

Crash this AM at SEE, 2 fatalities

I will note that if for some reason you are unable to complete an approach and need to land no matter what the minimums are - or what the actual weather is - stalling a Cessna or Piper is a good way to perform a controlled descent at no more than 500fpm - I've never seen a 172/177/182 or...

    Fun approach!

Possibly buying first airplane what are the steps?

Airplane buying steps: 1. Find airplane. Speak with owner - knows nothing, will not tell you anything, hides condition of airplane 2. Find another airplane - this guy does not want to sell - not really. Waste another week. 3. Find third airplane. spend money on inspections - find lots of...

    Short term use of amytriptiline

what about the 'have you ever been diagnosed with mental illness?" question? Until you know what the doc put in the record. . . lots of times we have guys who 'don't know' what the doc said 20 years ago . . . Anyway - if you say it's nothing - then thats good enough for me!

    Short term use of amytriptiline

Tongue in cheek? you'd think so until you get to Question 18(x): HAVE YOU EVER IN YOUR LIFE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH, HAD, OR DO YOU PRESENTLY HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING? (x) other illness, disability or surgery." 'other illness?' Chicken pox at age 4. No FAA limiting language here. Certainly...

Crash this AM at SEE, 2 fatalities

Wasn't anything 'practice' about the approach shown in the video on the newspaper website. Sure looked IMC to me - and the reported METARs showed it as well. I don't understand all this fuss over the on top issue - the tops are well known - many many other aircraft have entered or departed...

Crash this AM at SEE, 2 fatalities

And the clearance goes: "Cleared via the Brackett 26 departure procedure, maintain 4000, if not on top by 4000 notify ATC and state intentions." Then tower usually gives you bases and reported tops. It's all very much a non-event. I seriously don't think any of your 'setting yourself up to...
