Glideslope intercept on an LNAV+V approach

We're on the same page here. I contend, though, that at most airports, there will not be crossing altitudes outside the precision FAF, and descending on the glide path is not a problem in those cases. Of course, one cannot descend below a published crossing altitude in any case, and the altitude...

Glideslope intercept on an LNAV+V approach

The altitude busts at LAX had to do with a failure to comply with published crossing restrictions -- not altimetry error. Insofar as the LNAV+V "advisory glidepath" is concerned, I have not seen a case where it takes an aircraft below the non-precision FAF crossing altitude in hot weather. I...

Glideslope intercept on an LNAV+V approach

I'm not sure I agree with the premise of this post. In areas where altimeter error is great enough to warrant a temperature correction, the FAA has established cold temperature operations procedures on those approaches. In warm weather, there is no such risk. There is also no restriction on...

Austin Executive to get control tower

Advanced ATC is a control tower operator school that is expanding its foothold by operating more towers. Most (if not all) of the ones they currently operate are non-federal contract towers (NFCTs), and I suspect that Austin Exec will also be an NFCT. Airports that apply to receive federal...

    PIREPs

Every time I call or radio FSS and file a PIREP, it shows up on the map within a few minutes. The problem with PIREPs is within ATC facilities, which don't have the manpower to collect and disseminate PIREPs, particularly when doing so would help people make go/no-go decisions on the ground or...

    CBO ATC Privatization Numbers Misleading

    My apologies for offending you.

Austin Executive to get control tower

This is a bizarre conversation. Control towers are not always established due to traffic levels. Traffic levels are a criteria for the establishment of federal contract towers, but many of the towers in this discussion are not federal contract towers. Fueling and FBO services are unaffected by...

    CBO ATC Privatization Numbers Misleading

CBO is a joke. We all know privatization would save the government boat loads of money. Whether or not it's the right path to take is a different question. But the idea that privatization would be more expensive is ridiculous to me.

Austin Executive to get control tower

Affirmative. My guess is it will be a non-federal contract tower (NFCT).

    Is Texas GA friendly?

It's very GA friendly. North Texas is particularly hot and humid from June through September but other than that the weather is usually great here.

    Homeland Security Check

    Yep. All of the above.

    Remote ATC Tower

What ATC facility would be relaying a clearance to an unrecognized control tower? And where are there clearance delivery relays available through UNICOM?

FCC Warns Against Foolishness on Guard

The theory is more people would monitor 121.5 if others would stop talking superfluously and broadcasting music on it. I'm inclined to believe them.

    Sightseeing around FTW - possible?

You can circle downtown Fort Worth at 3,500 ft MSL and be both above FTW Class D and below DFW Class B airspace. Flight following is available on 135.97, but be advised in the evening hours they have been combining sectors like crazy, and you may not be able to initiate flight following because...

An IFR Cross Country Hat Trick (for the pilot seeking some actual)

Hmm. The instruction to call "once in the pattern" was either a mistake on the part of FSS, who runs the national CD hotline, or a mistake on the person at RDU who issued the clearance to FSS. I would file a NASA ASRS report on that at minimum. If you wanted to figure out what the deal really...

What Type of Radio Setup Allows Simultaneous Receiving and Transmitting?

No -- I am not talking about simultaneously receiving and transmitting on the same radio. I flew in a C182 a few months ago that had a GTN650 installed. While transmitting on COM1, we were simultaneously able to hear radio chatter (or the AWOS, etc.) on COM2. The same thing was possible when...

    In ear headset question

The 3M model is E-A-RLINK size 3A. They're the yellow cylindrical kind. Unfortunately, they're hard to find online without paying an exorbitant rate for shipping. I've actually bartered for them a few times with students who had huge orders. There's an audiologist down the street from me where I...

    In ear headset question

I use a set of Halos exclusively. The 3M ear tips I use with them block noise better than any ANR headset I've tried, including Bose A20s and Lightspeed Zulus. If you stick to the foam ear tips as opposed to molded inserts, you will have better results with noise cancellation.

    Get rid of my DG?

Are you IFR rated? If so, is the airplane able to be certified for IFR flight?

    Question only for CFIs

My opinion is irrelevant. Ask your insurance company. Insofar as § 91.147 is concerned, flight training is not an aerial tour.
