    What plane to look for?

I'll second Henning's Tripacer suggestion. Empty weight is usually between 1100-1200 pounds with a gross weight of 2000 pounds. 36 gallons of fuel at 9gph for the 160hp engine (less with the135 or 150 hp) Cruise speed about 100kts. Mine is a little faster than an older 172 and a little slower...

    Alaska Trip Update

If you like side trips, Land at Seldovia. It is across the bay from Homer Spit. It is a really picturesque fishing village. The pattern takes you downwind down a fjord like inlet then turn base and follow the mountain down on final to a gravel strip. I thought it was pretty. I think the strip is...

    U.S. to Canada and back

Johnson Creek is a great place to camp and one of the easier mountain fields to fly in and out of. But remember short dirt strips on flat land is different from a strip at the bottom of a narrow canyon. Johnson Creek has some room to manuever. The strip is well maintained and realtively long and...

    Michigan/Ohio/Indiana pilots (social)

Forgot to mention Clare County(Harrison) 80D There is a small restuarant on the airport, Yvonne's Aeroport Inn. Good food and now that they are smokeless you can even breath in there.

Try out Clare municipal 48D, take the courtesy car to town. The Cops and Doughnuts store has some of the best doughnuts ever. Their Long Johns weigh about a 1/2 pound each and the Apple Fritters are the size of Dinner plates. Then you can stop at Jay's for some good Gun and outdoor sports...

    New 91.109

Boy, it sounds like he needs flight instruction to obtain recent flight experience to me. If he is otherwise legal by FAA standards to be PIC then it would seem like you should be able to log the dual. How many other situations are there that would require instruction to obtain recent flight...

    Retaking the written

I don't know how far you are willing to travel for your exam, and I know you couldn't get an exam tomorrow but Bob Buttleman in Traverse City was my examiner for both private and instrument. I will say he was nothing if not fair. The winds were really fluky when I did the ride and the plane...

    Tie Down Knots

It wouldn't be that bad. My brother routinely bakes his pizzas on his Big Green Egg over real charcoal. Bacon, ham and sausage is cured so it would keep pretty good. Fresh vegetables would be seasonal but I don't like green peppers and onions anyway. Mushrooms, beef or venison, and tomato paste...

    airports

I like landing at different airports. I fly with a chart handy and if I see an airport or town name that sounds interesting I just drop in. I've got a little over 600 different landing sites so far. Many are pretty quiet but sometimes you run into some really interesting people and things. If...

    A beach picnic

Another one, a little outside his parameters, is Katama (1B2) on Martha's Vineyard. It's a grass strip with a "ramp" area right across the street from the beach.

Anyone Go Flying On Friday The 13th?

I flew Friday. Had to permanently reposition my Tripacer from Torrington WY to Lewistown MT. It was a great flight with a 15-20 knot tailwind. It was almost a little boring with no bumps and I flew so high at 7000ft, I only had to deviate around one set of hills. It was a nice 3.5 hour flight...

    GPS outage or system problem?

I've only had my Garmin 430 lose signal once while flying fairly near a very powerful radar center. Several other people lost signal in the same area. I'm think I routinely fly significantly closer to cell phone towers on a regular basis than most people and have not had problems. :dunno: :D...

    STC

I'm with Henning. Look at an O-320. It would make the Colt a nice plane. The Short Wing Piper Club has listings for most of the STC available for any of the Short Wings. http://shortwing.org/ If you go to the Officers page there is contact information for several people. Tom Anderson is pretty...

Month long road trip-Give me ideas for what to see.

It is hotter than snot in Eastern Wyoming right now. But, if you start west on I-80, get off at Ogallala and follow the Oregon Trail. Chimney Rock, Scottsbluff, then Register cliff with names carved in the cliff from the mid 1800's and some really cool ruts in Guernsey, WY. Then head towards...

    Bike path airports

You have to try Mackinac Island fudge. You can even watch them work it on big marble tables. It is pretty cool and makes the fudge taste even better! :wink2:

    Bike path airports

The Ultimate Bike destination in Michigan is Mackinac Island, MCD. The whole Island is a bike trail. No cars, only bikes, horses and foot traffic allowed. And they make really good fudge there.

    6Y9 2012 Flying Season Open

I think Brad and Diz would probably like both your presence and you presents. :) (Sorry about misspelling Grumman. Two days on call with minimal sleep kind of screws with my cognitive abilities. It didn't use to bother me as much 30 years ago.)
