Rutan VariEze Down in Columbia CA (O22)

I have a connection to this pilot through 3 degrees of separation. A family member contacted me about this crash and asked me what could have gone wrong. The ADSB data (linked below) shows that the pilot took from O22 (2,120' Field Elevation), climbed up to 15,400' GPS altitude, then turned...

    VOR Checks

@Larry in TN - So, let's suppose I'm working on my Instrument Rating, and my instructor tells me to track the 220 degree radial from the WIllie VOR (IWA), to intercept V105 south to Stanfield (TFD). We tune up the VOR, and start tracking the CDI. At the same time, we program the GPS to track...

    VOR Checks

Yes, I've done the Bravo transition quite a few times. I was really just dealing with limited time yesterday. I knew the other three methods would work, so I abandoned the VOT attempt pretty early. I'll plan on trying the VOT in the future for sure.

    VOR Checks

A few days ago I posted this thread regarding VOR checks, and the accuracy of VOR's. https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/vor-accuracy-for-instrument-training-and-checkride.139546/page-2 I learned quite a bit in the ensuing discussion, and this morning I decided to go out and get...

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

Thank you very much for patiently re-explaining, I do get it now. It's crazy that it's been almost 30 years since that VOR was re-aligned. It's basically on the 10E isogonic line. So even if the avionics in the airplane are "perfect", you're still guaranteed to be off by two degrees. wow...

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

I would think that for the relatively short distances I'm talking about this would be irrelevant, but I confess that I am not 100% certain about this.

Is that phase-shift calibration different for Nav 1 and Nav 2???

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

    I just did the trigonometry. ARCTAN (4 deg) x 7.8NM = .0697 * 7.8 = 0.5436 NM = 3303 feet However, you're math above is also right. ARCTAN (1 deg) = .0175 - > .0175 * 60 = 1.05 The part you're missing is that I believe my VOR receiver to be reporting to me a position that is 4 degrees off...

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

That's an interesting idea. I'll definitely give that a shot and see what happens. If nothing else, I'm curious. And like you say, it doesn't count as the legal check, but I'd still be interested to see how close it is.

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

Ya, this is really what I was getting at. If the VOR meets the legal requirements for IFR flight, I would need to demonstrate that to the examiner before we go flying. I was thinking I'd explain that I know the VOR's are legal, but close to the limit. I'd be upfront and explain that I know if...

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

There are only two VOT's in Arizona. One is at KPHX (bravo airporit). The other is not close. So... No. As far as VOR declination goes, I don't think that's what's going on. We've done this check against three different VOR's. PHX, IWA and TFD. We get the same 4 degree offset with each...

VOR Accuracy for Instrument Training and Checkride

-- Note - I am going to talk to my CFII about this, but I'm curious what everyone here has to say as well -- I'm chugging along through my instrument training. I'm up to about 30 hours of simulated instrument time. Hoping to wrap up the checkride by the end of October. One of the things my...

    Seattle Washington airplane rental recommendations?

Just to fill everyone in, I rented a 172 from Rainier Flight Service in Renton. I flew with a CFI on a nice scenic flight around the sound, then came back to Renton. About 1.3 hours for $299. Rather pricey, but it was incredibly beautiful. It's so much more green than the desert here in AZ.

    Seattle Washington airplane rental recommendations?

Wilkersk, thank you for the feedback. I am going to be staying in Kent. I really just want to go up with a CFI, and burn some holes in the sky. I don't even really need to do a checkout, as I am not going to be up in the area all that frequently. If I do come back for a longer trip, I'll...

    Seattle Washington airplane rental recommendations?

I'll be travelling to the Seattle WA area for work next week. I'd like to rent a plane and go up with a CFI to do some flying. I'm a current private pilot working on my instrument rating. Any suggestions?

“single engine Cessna” down at Show Low (SOW)

My sister works very close to the site of this crash. She has a friend who's father died in a plane crash a while back in the Payson AZ area. Whenever there is a plane crash in the mountainous north of AZ, she always reaches out to me about it. RIP to the deceased.

“single engine Cessna” down at Show Low (SOW)

http://www.kathrynsreport.com/2022/05/cessna-172f-skyhawk-n5532r-fatal.html Someone also posted a link to the ADSB ground track. They never got more than 100 feet off the ground. Looks they took off 24 and were attempting to come around for runway 3. Every ADSB ping reports 6200'. FE...
