well this isn’t ENTIRELY true dr B.

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

depending on your planned path, that may not be a useful option. If you are ok with being a once every couple of weeks flyer, then maybe. But I think you’re largely throwing money away training so infrequently as you are tying up time and money re-learning what you already paid for in a previous...

    DUI-HIMS

and yet some are sent through HIMS without DUI...or any other alcohol related incident. FAA is REALLY f’d up with their protocols.

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

I was in the same boat 1 year ago...ready to start training and couldn’t. I had many days where I questioned if I should continue. It took 7 months from contact with HIMS AME to special issuance. Nothing fun about it and I really feel your pain. Hang in there...it will be worth it in the end.

Running thread of questions studying for checkride

I have also never heard of flyway frequencies. I do remember the VFR flyway thing vaguely from PPL. I think in the real world since you have to be cleared into the airspace anyway, you would already be talking to them...and since you would need a mode c unless you had a crazy old plane and had...

    Aviation Knowledge Question

Is there another section for wet grass? That would make sense. Wet grass obviously much longer distance needed than the 20% I feel like something is missing

    Aviation Knowledge Question

I know what you’re saying and this is my interpretation of that. I’ll use easy round numbers for my interpretation. Ground roll is 500’, distance to clear 50’ obstacle is 1500’...add 20% to both for dry grass. The 1500’ needed is the total runway distance needed with the obstacle and ground roll...

iPad type - What are you flying with?

I use an iPad 7 but not mounted anywhere. I train in a Diamond 20....there is hardly room for pilots, let alone iPads. I end up with it on my leg when using it but stick it next to my left hip on the seat when it’s not needed. Diamond uses a stick rather than yoke, so anything on your lap/leg...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Well I’ve read so many good stories here, I might as well jump in. I started my flight training around mid august last year (2020) after a LONG road getting my medical...I’ve been most active on the medical forums but love to see how everyone else progresses on with their training. I got my PPL...

“Suspected” Afib leads to Waste of $$$$ and Spec. Issuance

Unfortunately the FAA makes their own diagnosis’s independent from the rest of the medical community. I’m all for safety as well....but come on.

1st Class Medical with 2 Alcohol incidents

Oh I didn’t hurt myself. Or anyone else. Or have a DUI, or a family incident...or a work incident. I had a high alcohol bio marker when tested for my psych evaluation that I had to get because of situational anxiety meds. All of the supporting DSM questioning was negative. Every other blood...

1st Class Medical with 2 Alcohol incidents

If the FAA doesn’t want pilots to consume alcohol, then make it the policy across the board. That would of course include everyone up to the top. But you can bet your lunch money that the FAA elite partake. Hell, most pilots that I know drink....often. I don’t have a problem with having to...

1st Class Medical with 2 Alcohol incidents

I sympathize with the your situation and I am one of the few who believe that not everyone who drinks (or drank) alcohol has a drinking problem. You can search my name and read my process. The FAA labeled me “abuse” for MUCH less than your dilemma. Bottom line is the FAA marches to their own...

    HIMS 1st Class Medical Maze

Government over-reach at its finest. The take-away I hear all the time is "it's their sky". We should just be happy to be allowed to fly in it at all.

    Multiple SSRI's

Depending on your specifics, I think path 2 is certainly obtainable for you. Won't be fast, or cheap...but do-able. As long as you don't have a record of on again/off again depression...recurring is bad. Someone can correct me if Im wrong, but I think continuous use of the SSRI can actually help...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

I would love to hear about this as well. I am already in the HIMS program, and while I am SUPER thrilled to finally be flying (Thank you Dr B), I would have loved to bypass the hoops, expense, and continued dog and pony show.

    Huge delay is special issuance

I assume you are working with a good HIMS AME?

    Can I hold a Medical

I’m sure this is all a huge kick in the nuts...but these guys are right. I think with suicide ideation it’s a lonnng wait at stable before they will consider it. Dr Bruce has commented on this before on a different post...look around the forum for “bbchien”, you May find it...and he may chime in...

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

oh no, they have a clear distinction between the two. My request was for alcohol and they asked for such.

Student pilot: 21 year old DUI, sober for 19 years, active in recovery

Am I the only one missing the drug references to an alcohol DUI thread? I don’t see anywhere where drug use is listed...why are you getting requests for illicit drug use? Is the whole story not told?
