Very sad to hear of this. Always thoroughly enjoyed reading anything Ben had to offer.

    Check out this weird seaplane

Flying boats are my favorite! The Beriev is a neat machine. Lots of titanium in it. I'd love to fly one. Ask me (almost) anything about the Seawind - I have a flying boatload of time in it.

    Anyone Flying a Velocity V-Twin?

Loved it as soon as I saw it at SnF a few years ago. Just recently noticing it has Seawind-ish main gear. I'd love the opportunity to fly one someday.

Why do people buy new aircraft?

Tax write-offs are a popular reason.

    Icon A5 Dunked...

Agreed on all counts! Paul Furnee is a fantastic guy, I trained with him for my CSES in a Buccaneer. I really think people are going to get hurt in these things because of the mentality passed down from the manufacturer. It's a lot easier to frig up on the water than most people realize.

    ASES and CFI

Likewise. No seaplane Qs on my CFI initial. Was certainly prepared for it though!

Stupid things we have seen pilots do

Saw the CAP launch a set of cowl plugs about 50' into the air. Wee! Also, a based aircraft on the field complained that his Cherokee Six was running rough and shut off him on short final at another airport, inspect and advise...it stays tied down outside and I just had a hunch before I went...

    What's the worst plane ever?

Worst airplane for me? Flight Design CTLS. Just did not seem well put together. Hand brake on the throttle quadrant is clunky. Can't move the rudder pedals until you have the airplane moving otherwise you'll bend stuff. Handled fine in smooth air, but the afternoon bumps in that airplane took...

    Need 182 checkout

This is the way to do it. I'm a CFI in the Harrisburg area with enough (about 100 hours) of time in 182s ranging from A thru T models - let me know if I can help you in any way.

Best aircraft to use for commercial and CFI training?

Agreed on the Arrow. It consistently and reliably glides like ****. Turn towards the runway within 2 seconds of pulling the power or you won't make it. Because of that, in my opinion, it makes the power off 180 easier than a better gliding airplane like a 172 or Archer. Commercial land in an...

    Tower: "Take down this number"

I got a "I have a phone number, for you advise ready to copy" about six months ago, I was pretty positive I was about to be on the receiving end of a noise complaint because I was doing pattern-work in the Seawind (noisy) with the owner. Turns out the airport just thought it was a cool airplane...
