    Mineral/ashless dispersant oil for break-in

Mineral oil has a tendency to coke up around the tubrocharger shaft if I recall correctly...not something you want at extremely high temps and 30k + RPMs.

    I can't believe I spun a Cessna 172 twice! Now I'm checkride shy.

What they said. Really though, I sincerely doubt you were actually in a spin. I've seen students bungle up power on stalls just about every way possible and yes, I believe you allowed a wing to fall over and you probably saw a lot of ground, I kind of doubt you were actually spinning. It's my...

Why I No Longer Fly Lean of Peak For Now

We just ran a Saratoga HP at work (300 horsepower IO540 non turbo) to 2200 hours on the factory engine, no cylinder work, no nothing. Only overhauled it because it was 200 over recommended and we fly customers around in it. All of its life has been rich of peak, primarily cross country flights...

Tell me why I should not buy a Malibu.

As stated above, Matrix is the unpressurized version of the Mirage. Otherwise identical even in performance except for oxygen plumbing. (The Mirage has Oxygen generators) PM me if you want to talk PA-46, I fly the piston Malibu/Mirage and also the M500 (Meridian) and M600 as well.

    Grounded indefinitely

Dang Nate, really sorry to hear that. If you're able and willing and end up near south central PA/northern MD we can do some soaring if you're interested...if you're really lucky I could get in you in a work plane, PA46 or a PC12. Hoping for the best.

    IFR into KGAI (Gaithersburg)

IFR from the northwest into GAI, file MRB V166 EMI...you won't go all the way to Westminster but 9 times out of 10 that's what they'll put you on. They can hook you onto the GPS from BEGKA, or if it's a visual day you can do the visual without any issues. There's a good dedicated frequency for...

Hello from a new member in Maryland

Welcome! All sorts of good info here. I fly for a company based at DMW. I know folks who have done training at FDK and haven't heard a whole lot bad about it. There seems to be a good assortment of aircraft available for you and haven't heard that there's much of an issue regarding instructor...

    Piper Mirage in’s and outs

Rockymountain nailed it all. Down low (less than 10k) it's a 175 knot airplane. At FL200 it's a 200 knot airplane, fuel burn remains the same. 30" and 2400 RPM will give you those speeds on ~22 gph leaned to 120 ROP. It'll land a lot shorter than it'll take off in, especially loaded in the...

    Flying across the continent

What a flight! I'm just realizing I used to see that plane all over SEG back when I was learning to fly around 2010-2011.

    All about Cessna 310s

Great writeup! Sounds like the naturally aspirated R is the bees knees. Although I absolutely love the look of the short nose tuna tankers and I reckon 300 horse per side for 5 mins on one of those old light airframes would be a fun time. Sky king!

    Amphibian types and recommendations

Most of my amphib time is in flying boats (Seawind/LA4-200) but I do have some time in a "Super Sealane" and a PA-12 on straight floats. I'd argue you have the potential of getting more utility out of a floatplane (C180 or bigger) but you can have a lot more fun in a flying boat, the Lake...
