Is carb heat really necessary when 80F?

OP - all of the above is correct. Your instructor did you a disservice if he or she did not impress upon you the seriousness of carb ice, especially in the little continentals. The warmer the air is, the greater its ability to carry moisture. When that moisture rich air is rapidly cooled, ice...

    Spend $1000 to make $100?

Jack - I can't comment much about the RV thing, but becoming a flight instructor has probably been my greatest source of personal satisfaction and accomplishment to date, not to mention the doors it has opened for me over the 5 years I've had it. (Ask me about how my company let me use a PC12...

What Is The Lowest AGL You Will Slip Prior To Landing

Aerodynamically, the airplane doesn't know if you're 3 feet or 3000 feet about the runway in a slip...if you're doing it right, you're slipping the airplane onto the pavement in a crosswind. Even if it's not a crosswind, in some aircraft it's common procedure to slip the thing to the ground, as...

    Flying famous people

I've flown General McChrystal as well...outstanding man. A few politicians, a few TV personalities...that's about it.

    Air-to-Air Piper Archer

Never stop posting these, Jack! Nice work as always. Great looking Archer.

Can you learn to fly on a F33A?

Alternative option - do all of the building block stuff up to and including solo flights in a traditional trainer, and then start learning and do it all over again in the Bonanza, eventually getting to the point where you'll solo that and finish out your rating in it. If that's what you're going...

    Headset for PC-12

Unfortunately not the case! Noise cancelling is nicer but you'll be just fine with a regular old pair of DCs if you have to, I use them all the time.

    BMW Z3 Roadster

For reference, in central PA I paid $8k for a 100k miles 2007 Z4. Black with a black top, premium package options, 3.0l inline six with a six speed. Great car, hasn't given me a lick of trouble. I expect I'll be able to sell it for around $9500 if I can wait for the right buyer. It is in...

    GTN 650 Descent Calculator

Are you using VNAV or VCALC in your GTN 650? The unit should be capable of one or the other with a configuration change.

    Air-to-Air Piper Apaches

Some of your best work yet! Saw them on IG this morning.

That's a working airplane! Would love to have a 205.

182 O-470 burg burp on climbout

I believe that! I've seen lots of O470 installs with a carb air temp gauge, are you lucky enough to have one by chance? Such great airplanes though.

182 O-470 burg burp on climbout

Bet you a dollar she made some ice. Good odds if it's humid and you're behind a carbd continental. Above advice is also good.

    Private plane

As a charter pilot, I loathe most brokers. Almost without exception, they're an interruption in the communication process and do little more than make some calls and send some emails to take their cut off the top. Call the operator directly!

    1977 Turbo Lake LA-4-200

It'll give you that little bit of extra oomph to get off a high mountain lake. Haven't flown a turbo Buc for what it's worth, only the NA version. There are a few Bucs out there that are turbo normalized as well.

    Piper Archer III nosewheel centering

All of the above...I'll add that it's a very similar system all the way up through the PA46 line. The Meridian/M500 is especially skittery on rollout if you don't have the nosewheel perfectly straight the moment it touches down. The Malibu/Mirage takes it a step further. The rudder trim system...

    GTN VNAV Option Not Present

If you don't have VNAV on the GTN you probably have VCALC...which if you don't have an autopilot capable of flying a VNAV profile I find to be more useful anyway. If I recall correctly, VCALC and VNAV is a setting that can be toggled in the super secret Garmin menu that your avionics guys get into.

Flight Plan Go tips and tricks?

Used it as a flight department (Pt 135 turboprop charter) for filing, tracking, and weight and balance. We relatively recently made the switch to foreflight for what it's worth. I like Fltplan Go - I can have an IFR plan on file in a minute flat from my phone with Fltplan Go. My advice would...

    ORD

Awesome! Haven't done ORD yet but I've done MDW in a PA46 and PC12. Probably the most challenging single pilot airport I've been to purely because of the ground ops. Glad you two were able to experience that.
