oil stain on top of forward cowling?

Could be a bunch of things. If your prop is seeping some oil, you'll find streaks of it on the rear facing side of the blade, and likely some droplets on your windscreen. A picture would be very helpful in this instance.

Piper Arrow Gross weight - High altitude

Any time you're not at Vy in this scenario, you're wasting energy. I know it's not much, but I would be flying the numbers from the performance calculations all the way up through the take off. To the OP - Wheels up in the early morning Leave some fuel behind Run the numbers (with a...

Piper Arrow Gross weight - High altitude

I think the word "lethargic" will describe how it'll perform. Hell, a heavy Arrow III at gross with a DA of 2500 feet barely gets out of its own way. I think an arrow would do well with an o540.

    Magneto check AFTER landing

The only mag check I do after landing is the momentary "off" check before shutdown to see if they'll actually ground out. Also, remember, you can't hurt the engine by leaning too much on the ground during normal operations and taxi. Lean it until she coughs and just go barely rich from there.

Where do propeller dings come from?

Stones, pebbles, taxiway lights, bolts, etc. (Okay maybe not bolts, but have you ever done a FOD walk on a runway? Scary :yikes: Erosion is a real thing though, sand and grit makes for a very rough leading edge on the prop. As mentioned above, precip of any kind is just really hard on leading...

Bonanza down near Paine Field, WA

So sad...I wonder what actually happened. Appears to be a very survivable landing, unless it was a pancake style arrival...again, very sad. Stay safe out there, people.

    Student buying an airplane

Very very fair point. And this could very well be one of those scenarios...Possible, not probable I suppose.

    Student buying an airplane

There's plenty of us young dumb kids that wouldn't have touched anything about that scenario with a 10 foot pole.

Trimming the Stabilizer on J-3 Cub (issue)

All of the above. Another probable cause would be the jackscrew being gummed up, which leads to the cable slipping on the pulley. All in all not too bad of a job.
