    Bad decisions-dodging coastal thunderstorms

Having investigated some bad IMC crashes that wiped out whole families, and dealt with the litigation that follows, I don't mess around with the CBs. Luckily out west I can leave early and avoid most of it. I fly for work 99% of the time so no family with me, and don't really care to take them...

    Wildfire photo KSTS

The non political explanation is years of woodland mismanagement and fire suppression which was a healthy part of the ecosystem. Throw in weak utility company oversight and hotter, dryer seasons, and you get this. So we have dense, dry forests, neglected power infrastructure with lines...

    The Smoke & Fires

Bad in the Bay Area. IMC due to smoke. I try not to fly in this hell but sometimes I have to. I strap on an N95 and go IFR. For AG strips/non instrument approach field destinations I just don't go. I tried that smoke scud running a couple years ago with the AG boys who go regardless but...

The funny stuff us A&Ps find

In my spacecraft days, we found a large flashlight inside the satellite after an acoustic test(simulates the rocket). It was still on. How Quality Control didn't catch that was beyond me, that's their sole job at that point and were attached to our hips when we close up panels. Also found a...

Just getting started, Would you be so kind to give me some input on a career path?

First, keep your day job. If you must get into aviation, get your ratings up to CFI while still working the Subaru job. Then once you have your ratings, you can think about which avenue to pursue. I don’t have much to add to what already has been said but I will say that crop dusters are in...

    f16's at Toledo

Nice. Hopefully they shortened the read back to “F-16s wilco”, and the tower responded “F-16s! PLEASE READ BACK WITH FULL INSTRUCTIONS!!”

Check your cowl after any work

Humans are fallible. I’ve seen this in every sector of aerospace I’ve been in- tools and crap left over from the factory, mechanics leaving tools in engines or not torquing/installing stuff in correctly and causing more damage or a crash. Tools and flashlights being left in satellites that are...

Check your cowl after any work

Haha in A&P school our instructor said to never engrave your tools for this exact reason.

Cessna 310 true cost of ownership

What about a retract single like C-210 turbo or Bonanza? Are you thinking twin = safety? You fly a SEP now so no real downgrade in safety with a faster SEP. An engine failure over the ocean in a twin will most likely still end up in a ditch situation anyway.

    172 vs 177 vs 182

Piper Comanche 250(PA-24-250) perhaps. It is a retract however, and they aren’t made anymore. But low wing Piper product with enough useful load and speed. I’ve seen a lot of odd things crammed in those things with no problem.

ASES, Is it worth the time and trouble. How many have & don't use?

Basically unless you’re going to do it professionally or buy one, it would just be a fun thing to do/bypass a BFR. It really isn’t practical.

    180 hp 152 performance

Not sure there are 152/180 STCs(maybe one off field approvals) but defiantly 150/180s. Mostly tow planes. I hear they climb like homesick angels(as mentioned) but not exactly speed demons due to the airframe. Gotta have the long range tanks though because the gas goes fast. C-150/150s with...

    New King Air 360

King Air is a good platform. Lots of corporate birds out there, and special mission/government contract MC-12s. But like anything, when new competition enters the market, innovation happens....Paging Pilatus, twin T-prop offering?

    The worst people in aviation...

I’m an adjuster and although we’re only hearing your side of the story, it sounds terrible. Independent adjusters can be hit or miss. Some have chips on their shoulders for whatever reason. I work for a carrier, and I know we all strive to do a good job and be more than fair to our insureds...

Learning to change your own oil

Do it on your car a few times for the general process, then stop by a shop at your field and watch a change learn some specific tricks and specialty tools to my your life easier(and cleaner) then you’re good to go. Yes the safety wire is the most difficult part but that can be practiced. Many...

    What plane should I buy?

Cessna T182T. Turbo for DA, fixed gear for simplicity, just enough space for your kids and dog. Still in production and every mechanic can wrench on it. The sexy option is an early Colombia 400. Fixed gear, fast, enough useful load, factory AC. But certainly not a trainer.

Just landed Harris Ranch (3O8) and its cool

Interesting. I’ve flown VFR through LA many times and was never denied the Hollywood Park Route. Always quiet, all the riff raff is below. Harris Ranch is great. Used to have the loveliest workers at the steakhouse. As in, once she goes to Hollywood, she ain’t never goin’ back.
