Going to the airport to get information about starting my PPL

Re: stalls - remember there's a better than fair chance your instructor wants to go home at the end of the day - s/he is not going to let you do anything too hazardous. Re: Cost - I'm in a very reasonable club between Chicago and Milwaukee and our instructor rate is $50, our early '80s 172Ps...

    First flight in . . . nearly 11 years.

Got signed off this morning. This was Part 3 of my Flight Review. 0.4 on the Hobbs, 3 laps in the towered pattern (ENW). Lots of compliments from the CFI. After I kicked him out, I flew a quick 17.5 nm hop to C81 where I earned my ticket in '04 and did one landing there for old time's sake...

My First 10 Passengers & Lessons Learned

Thanks, both. Sorry for the 7500, but that's great info. If I do the trip, I'll definitely debrief in my own thread. Squawk VFR and resume own navigation. ;)

My First 10 Passengers & Lessons Learned

Cool thread. I love giving rides and can't wait to be de-rusted enough to get back to it. Got me wondering/counting - I had 110-ish hours before my layoff 11 years ago. In that time I took 13 humans, one dog and one cat. ;) I always refused offers to pay for gas, but some of my family is very...

    Garmin acquires FltPlan

Installing now and will have a play with X-Plane in a bit.

    My shirt was cut

Congrats! Nothing like it. I should look for my old shirt now that I'm dusting off the wings. Love the CloudAhoy debrief. What's your ground roll in that airplane, like 25'? I only had my old handheld Garmin running on the back seat on my flight review last week so the track is really...

    Garmin acquires FltPlan

Hmm, as I return to the left seat, I've been messing w/ FltPlan Go a lot (only with XPlane so far, no in the air - too much rust to knock off to worry about gadgets) and it's seemed 'good enough.' If it goes Tango Uniform, it'll probably push me towards iPad/ForeFlight.

    First flight in . . . nearly 11 years.

Hoping all the wetness (some flash flooding happening north of the Cheddar Curtain tonight) clears out by Thursday morning - got an hour booked. @woodchucker I'm not sure what it says about me that I've been more nervous about new or forgotten regs than skills. Guess I fear the FAA more than...

put myself in a weired spot last evening

I wrote up but then deleted a story of an XC back in 2006. Bordered on thread hijack, but the point was FlightWatch was pretty adamant that my PIREP for chop and lightning nearby was wrong b/c they 'didn't see it.' Ended up putting down for 20 minutes to let it blow over and all was well.

    RC model airplane at Airport

E.g. C81 I mentioned above, right in the A/FD: "BE ALERT MODEL AIRCRAFT FLYING 1/2 MILE SE OF RY 27 THRSHLD."

put myself in a weired spot last evening

Weather, like the Wu-Tang Clan, ain't nothing to mess with. Lightning comes from convection and I hear tell convection and spam cans don't mix. Or do mix entirely too well. My vote is to avoided like the plague.

    RC model airplane at Airport

There's one under the pattern at Campbell Airport in Grayslake, IL (C81). It's less of a concern than the high tension lines. Hahn's Sky Ranch (2TS) - a grass strip in Wayne, WI south of OSH a bit is home to http://www.skyranchflyers.com/ It's no longer officially an airport, but still an R/C...

    Easing a puppy into flying?

I've only taken my now-14-year-old lab once (well, twice counting the there and back, about 2.5 hrs each) back when she was about 2. No acclimation needed - most labs are kind of cool that way. I worried about her ears, but she never seemed upset (no panting, etc). Probably should have done a...

Sure is nice. Can't wait to get my 4 year old up. She's counting the days. BTW, I'm a "crazy motorcycle rider" as well. ;)

Yeah, I was a bit surprised this guy said just another half hour - I was honestly expecting 2-4 hours of hand-holding minimum before getting kicked loose again. I probably will get a little more dual than that, or at least beat the pattern a good bit solo before taking pax again. There's always...

    Class 3 vs basic

I found a doc (AME who also does BasicMed) via AOPA's list: https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/pilots/medical/doctor-finder He did pointedly ask me why BasicMed instead of Class 3 and pretty much said he figures people going for BasicMed "are trying to hide something," but he took my money, did the...

@sourdough44 Thanks for the heads up on BUU. Was out there for a couple hours with my middle girl, who is starting to be as nuts about cars as she seems to be about planes. Great morning. Drove out, but next year . . .

That looks awesome and is definitely drivable (still not signed off yet), but I don't think I'll be able to swing it. Need to do all the work I didn't get to today.
