    Made my own from a pair of wrap-around safety glasses, a couple short pieces of painter's tape to mask out the clear area, and a rattle can of black lacquer. Total investment about $5. Better than any commercial device I have ever seen, short of a sim with the screen turned off.

    Are there actual numbers on your EGT or just a bunch of hash marks and a notation that says "25° per divison"? Being familiar with Pipers, my guess is the latter. The red needle is designed to be moved to "Peak" temp for those conditions on that day. Leaning is performed (either ROP or LOP)...

    Your CFI actually forbids you from trimming after you have your pitch set with the yoke? Time for a new CFI. I do see a lot of certificated pilots flailing away at the trim WAYYY too much, not really understanding how to use it correctly. To forbid you from using trim at all, however...

    A student and I sat in a hold for 30 minutes at SWEDD in VMC while approach shuttled three different "important" commuters one after the other into KHLN. When the fourth one checked in on the freq I cancelled IFR, descended 500', and went in VFR with the student still under the hood.

    I once picked up carb ice at 10,500' in a C-172 at full throttle on the 180hp motor. Took me a little while to notice, but once I realized what was happening (RPM very slowly decreasing), I applied heat and just like advertised, it stumbled for a few LONG seconds then smoothed out.     Notta... Tried it multiple times. Even starting at 2300 RPM in level cruise and pulling back real slow it simply goes from smooth to rough with no increase.
