One of the most amazing airshow displays I have seen

Totally agree. The night air shows at EAA are always great, but this year was the best. The drones were amazing. It’s always great to see the Aeroshell (now Titan) team at night, along with Ken Rieder and Matt Younkin. It never gets old.

    Jimmy Buffet Has Gone West

Jimmy had a lot of close ties to New Orleans - he grew up on the Gulf Coast, got his start on Bourbon Street, and was a diehard Saints fan. He was often coming into town for one thing or another. I had a chance encounter with him at Lakefront airport several years ago. I had taken a hiatus from...

New CFI (Me) and my Son

I am a CFI and taught my teenage son to fly - I can't recommend it enough. I think it is perfectly safe as long as you have somebody who is unbiased checking in on him. I had an experienced 5000 hr CFI do regular interval flight checks to make sure he was progressing and not learning bad habits...

    CFI Renewal

My certificate expires in June as well. I just started the AOPA course. It’s as enjoyable as it can be. They will also handle the paperwork upon completion of the course.

Looking for a&p /IA near New Orleans /Slidell

I use Rocco Bonura - he is based out of Lakefront and Stennis. I think he is outstanding, however I’m not sure if he’s taking on new customers at this point. I can give you his contact information offline if you’d like.

    Oshkosh Info for a Newbie

In addition to practicing flying at specific airspeeds in different configurations, become comfortable with doing a continuous turn from downwind to final. ATC will normally not want to you square your base leg, but instead fly a continuous turn from downwind to final while descending.

    My 2021 Flying Map

Thank you for introducing us to this mapping site. It’s interesting to go back and review the year - 135 hrs for me, primarily in a 182 and some in a 172. Here’s to many more adventures in 2022!

    How did you find aviation?

My grandfather inspired me. He was a ball turret gunner in a B-17 during WWII. When I was a kid he was retired and would babysit me during my summers off while my parents and grandmother worked. After lunch, our afternoon ritual was sitting at one of two airports in town watching airplanes...

Is It Better to Fly at 55% Power or 75% Power, in Terms of Engine Health?

At Oshkosh I attended a technical forum hosted by Continental engines. Most of it was way over my head, but it was quite interesting. One of the things the speaker mentioned is each engine has a percent power that is optimal and is usually specified in the engine manual or technical ops. For...

Is the POA Crowd Already Causing Problems at Airventure?

I am as well. Not gonna lie, I’m a little surprised at how quiet the pilot crowd is on the North 40 after dark

    OSH 2021

Spent the late afternoon sitting with the crowd by the green dot watching the landings on 9/27. The controllers and 99% of pilots were outstanding. I’ll never get used to seeing 5 airplanes on short final all at once. It was really impressive. I didn’t see the Cessnas almost collide. There was...

Let Discuss Flying in Scattered Thunderstorms

The other day I flew TOP->NEW dealing with both a frontal line and the usual pop-up T-storms. My flight path looks like a drunken sailor was flying the airplane, with multiple deviations and at one point doing a 180 and landing at ADF to wait out a line to break up. My son slept most of the way...

Where's your go-to place to fly?

I'll second the DTS/JKA destinations. Both make for an easy weekend beach getaway. Plus, JKA is a great $100 hamburger destination - we usually take a courtesy car to Lulu's. It's a 3 minute drive or 10-15 minute walk from the airport.

    Commercial Knowledge Test Prep

I used King for the knowledge and Sheppard for the test prep. One thing I love about the King courses is the lifetime access. So whenever I need a refresher on a topic I just pull up one of their videos on my iPad.

If money was no object, help me create the perfect Cessna 182

    Have AirPlains install the Continental I/O 550. It’s a great engine for a 182.

Route tips from Houston to North Florida along the Gulf Coast

Unfortunately the restaurant at NEW has been closed due to a combination of Covid and the death of their chef. Be sure to call in advance to see if they've reopened. Do take the time to overfly the New Orleans area though. The views over downtown and the Mississippi River are pretty cool and the...

    Memorable Resturants on/near field

Gulf Coasters: NEW - New Orleans - Messina’s at the Terminal (can park at Flightline or Signature). Great New Orleans food. Call in advance to see if they’re open because of Covid. The Art Deco terminal at NEW is historically restored and beautiful to walk through. HSA - Bay St. Louis...

    Favorite Online Ground School?

I used King for Instrument through CFI and have been happy with their product. I like that it is a lifetime purchase with automatic updates. My son is working on his Private now and using Gold Seal. He is very enthusiastic about their course, and as his CFI I like that I can follow his progress...

    Getting started at 14?

If there is glider training available near you then start now. It is invaluable training. Otherwise, I’d recommend starting your private pilot training around 15 1/2. Aim to solo at 16. Checkride on your 17th birthday. That’s the earliest you’ll be able to do everything. Good luck!
