    The Best IFR Hood

Don't have a pirep on those, but I just bought a pair of BlockAll's. My students seem to think they work well and make it difficult to cheat. I'm jumping in to this tread late, so sorry if these were already mentioned. http://blockalls.com/ Gene

    Using FlyQ (question)

Thanks for the response... No, he's not using the app for primary nav. He has an IFR cert. GPS (430W) and he has 2 Nav-Com radio's which are his primary means. He presented this question to me when he saw me set up a holding radial on my iPad using Garmin Pilot. There you put in the VOR...

    Using FlyQ (question)

Flyers, I have a student using FlyQ as his GPS and flight planning tool for his IFR training. Can this app provide a radial or inbound course to a fix for holding? Gene

The Area Forecast is bidding us a ta-ta...

Scott, No one could argue with anything you are saying. What you are saying is, smart, conservative and true. I don't think we have any major difference of opinion. What I'm saying is, I would never depend on one TAF to know if my passengers and I will be safe in any long flight. I...

The Area Forecast is bidding us a ta-ta...

Here is another thought...what product do we use for the 1, 2 3 rule in IFR flight planning and filing if our destination doesn't have a TAF? Gene

The Area Forecast is bidding us a ta-ta...

All true Scott, but no one mentioned absolutes and no one should assume *identical* weather forecasts from one ap to another. I hope some basic common sense would occur to most properly trained pilots in such a situation. I did say I could *interpolate*, not just take one TAF and paste it on...

The Area Forecast is bidding us a ta-ta...

Hmmm...I guess I read "2nd half of 2016" as "2nd have of 2015". My apologies. I should do more fact checking. I can't wait for the new product though! :) Gene Wentzel, CFII

The Area Forecast is bidding us a ta-ta...

Aviators, I read an article in AOPA magazine the other day that disseminated information how the Area Forecast (FA) will make a graceful exit on December 31, 2015 from our pre-flight planning toolbox. At first I expected to be shocked, appalled or sad, but after a very immediate second...

    Funniest Passenger Briefing?

I don't do anything funny, but my checklist has: PASSENGER BRIEFING........S.A.F.E.T.Y. That is to remind me all that I want to brief the passenger on: S: Seat-belts and Smoking A: Airsickness, Airsick bags and Air-vents F: Fire extinguisher location and use E: Exits T...

    HP, Complex & Multiengine

Flyers, I had an old-school instructor who stated to me the other day, that as long as one has a basic PP certificate, you can fly a complex, high performance or multiengine airplane all day long, and be legal, as long as you don't carry passengers. I didn't correct him, but found the...

    Checklist Location

I hate that location to during flight training. In most aircraft it blocks my view for traffic in that part of the sky. Granted, it isn't much, but enough to make me smirk, but not enough for me to speak up. The most important thing is that once you determine a good location ALWAYS put it...

"If I said 'VFR not recommended,' would you want to hear the rest of the brief?"

That reminds me of this email joke of a person trying to create a password: Please create a Password... -cabbage Sorry the password must be more than 8 characters... -boiled cabbage Sorry the password must contain 1 numerical character... -1 boiled cabbage Sorry the password...

"If I said 'VFR not recommended,' would you want to hear the rest of the brief?"

Not in my experience....usually it come right at the point where it makes a difference, like: "ceiling reported at around 1800', so VFR is not recommended."

"If I said 'VFR not recommended,' would you want to hear the rest of the brief?"

Yep...did that depend on FF thing, except I was using both my Garmin 796 with XM weather/TFR's and Garmin Pilot app on my iPad mini with GDL39-3D. They displayed NOTHING and I flew right into a stadium TFR. Yep...NASA report, hand-wringing, and some groveling. Gene

    Student buying an airplane

I am going to ask the group's opinion and I don't want to sound critical, so I am simply going to state facts: my student is buying an airplane (has not solo'd yet) and we haven't flown in a year. We only spoke on the phone this week since a year ago. the plane is a '55 Beechcraft...
