    Concealed carry and GA

In a state where open carry and concealed carry are covered under the same license, people often don’t conceal as well as they used to before the same permit covered open. But for the reference above, it specifically refers to the sterile portions of an airport, and a few other references...

    Laptop questions

Don’t let the fan spin while blowing it out. Too many fans die an early death from being over revved while under asymmetric load produced by a canned air duster.

    Ford 9N Ignition Issues

Not to knock used scopes, as I have a couple working tektronix scopes that usually get the job done, but the last couple people who asked me about used scopes, I simply said they need to evaluate the features, risk and pricing against this...

    Tips for cleaning hangar

Another problem with leaf blowers. Most of them are 2 cycle, and spew unburned 2 cycle oil that coats everything and likely causes even more dirt to stick to the walls and ceiling. I know this because of a seasonal display at a fire station. Every year before the display goes live, one of...

    Ford 9N Ignition Issues

Some people prefer carb cleaner, as a lower risk booster fuel. Either way, you can really wash a lot of oil off the cylinder walls and rings.

Check antenna connections/condition using VSWR meter?

Handhelds aren’t always designed for 50 ohm impedance, as they aren’t intended to be hooked up to a feed line, and their antennas are nearly always compromise antennas. So if the handheld is designed for 75 ohm impedance, you could get unexpected SWR readings using with 50 ohm impedance cable...

    Ford 9N Ignition Issues

Minor correction to one of the comments above, the coil starts building energy when then - side is connected to ground, and it fires when that primary current is interrupted by disconnecting the - side from ground. Also, the condenser capacitor is not just about reducing RF noise in this...

Check antenna connections/condition using VSWR meter?

The tough question is if the antenna ground connection is degraded, does the antenna coax braid act as a good enough counterpoise that the SWR doesn’t really suffer?

Check antenna connections/condition using VSWR meter?

An antenna analyzer would be a reasonably good test, though not necessarily 100% complete, but it is a lot better than any multimeter based test. A simple SWR meter requires transmitting to measure reflected power, usually at least 1W to get a reading. The antenna analyzer transmits such a low...

    iPad mini: It's alive!!!

As near as I can tell, it is still AGPS, where data lookups from the cellular towers, and WiFi SSIDs present help jumpstart the location, and many calculations are handed off to remote servers. So it can’t really get started without data service, and is always happier with data service. The...

Is it okay to cap off a wing tank sump?

Why are inner tubes built that way? All a fuel bladder is, is a fuel safe inner tube for a fuel tank shaped space.

    [NA]Car tire pressure[NA]

If that was in response to my comment about 45 PSI marked sidewalls, no, these are Pirellis on an 01 Audi TT Roadster.

Do you have a real ID?

While I admit mine is currently expired, the last time I was in a bulk new hire orientation, I was surprised that it appeared that roughly 10% of them used a passport for their I9 paperwork. I wasn’t expecting it to be that high. It certainly is simpler that way.

Is it okay to cap off a wing tank sump?

From the application, that likely isn’t tapered thread, and it might not even be straight pipe thread. I wouldn’t think the odds of actually getting a seal are at all good, even if you find a cap with the correct thread. You might wind up the bladder on the inside before you came close.

    [NA]Car tire pressure[NA]

One of my cars has a recommended front PSI of 42 PSI for handling, and the tire sidewall has 45 PSI max. Broad generalizations are dangerous. I think most 45 profile tires have rated max pressures over 35 PSI.

Let's hop in the time machine aviation nerds.

At my previous employer, it seems like just about every other year, some slice of some critical production application was found running on a old desktop in somebody’s cube. Who thinks this is a good idea, I’ll never know. What shortcuts, and other issues exist that they didn’t take it...

    [NA]Car tire pressure[NA]

Like many, I often use door jamb as a starting point. I also tend to add more to the front than the rear, though on one car, I instead wound up lowering the rear pressure 2-3 psi. I will also note that in a very general sense, the more gap between sticker and sidewall, the more excess load...

Do you have a real ID?

My current and at least previous Texas DL have the barcode and magstripe. But neither one has the gold star. And Texas seems to use a really inferior mag stripe. It has never scanned successfully anywhere. Just being stored in my wallet the same as the credit cards, it has visible holes in...

    3 year old router question

Possibly one of your neighbors has installed some commercial scale grow lights, or a reef aquarium with less than stellar LED drivers. Less and less attention goes into quality control of import consumer products and RF interference especially. There are places where Sirius XM drops out with no...

Dallas area pilots - Check your planes

It sort of stinks that it appears that the insurance industry has managed to generate and sell the logic that damage due to straight line winds is evidence that the insured structure was not built to withstand local dominant wind conditions. But microbursts out of supercells would sure appear...
