    Lets make Friday 'Joke Day'!

If that cowboy is wearing chaps I think we’ve found a disturbing trend with that plane/paint scheme.

Mooney down in Victoria, MN 8/7/2021

I was thinking the same thing as you. My rough estimate is the plane was going about 240 kts at impact. Looking at a random sample of doorbell cameras 30 frames per second appears to be the standard frame rate. The plane looks to have traveled roughly the length of the airframe (27 feet) in the...

Merlin IIIb vs Piper Cheyenne 3 or 400LS

If you’re interested in older turbo props have you look at Turbo Commander 1000s? I think it would meet your performance requirements and from articles I’ve read in the past it sounds like there is still decent support out there.

Famous pilots you have met.......I'll start out...

I met him at Oshkosh in 1998. He sat down across from my dad and me at lunch. The name tag on his hat made target recognition pretty easy. Fortunately we had just been at the EAA Museum and spent some time at the Voyager exhibit otherwise I wouldn’t have known who he was. I asked what it was...

    Raptor Aircraft

I’m glad that he was able to walk away from the accident. A couple guys I knew put a Grumman C-1A down in a corn field after an engine failure. The plane was all beat to hell. They were able to trailer it back to Topeka and eventually able to get it flying again. Here is a link to their old...

    Dale Snodgrass crash in Idaho

Blancolirio just released another video. He talked with other owners of similar planes and they made it seem like the possibility of the front seat sliding back would not be plausible in this case. The theory of this video is that misrigged or runaway trim could have been the cause. I have a...

    Air Travel in Ten Years

That’s absurd. All our flying cars will be retired 10 years from now and we’ll just be beaming everywhere Star Trek style.

    Memorable Resturants on/near field

KTOP - Philip Billard in Topeka, KS has one in the “terminal” building down the hall from the FBO. It’s the one I grew up with (got my PPL there and worked at the FBO throughout college). The owner, Tammy, started working there as a waitress and is good people.

Why are pilots so hesitant to declare an emergency?

I’ve declared an emergency probably around a dozen times and agree with this approach. Some of the situations were clear cut, something is on fire, type emergency and those are easy to call. The ones that make me ask should I declare or not I’ve always declared it. I’d rather have the priority...

Final Approach Fix symbol - MS Word

If you’re using a Windows computer this is what I would try. You’ll have to do some hunting but if you want a special character it’s the easiest way I know to find it.

Have you tried looking in the character map?

    Can USAF assist ATC?

Yeah, when civilian controllers do the job right it helps every plane land whole. When AWACS “controllers” do their job they help the right planes come down in pieces.

    Airplane abuse

This was tough to watch that happen to an old plane. Despite the large quantities of stupid I’m glad nobody got hurt, there was plenty of potential for it.

    flashlights for cockpit

I rarely do night flying anymore but back when I did a lot of it I found a microphone mounted lip light to be super useful. http://www.nitevis.com/SSI_MikeLite_LipLight.htm

    An Oops! To Remember

If you know the reception is poor below 2,000 in that area, have you tried turning the radio’s squelch off while in the problem area/altitude? The constant static is a minor annoyance if it lets you hear the controller.

(NA) Who knows about 3D printing?

I haven’t ventured beyond using PLA and PETG filaments and will probably stick with those until I have a need for something different. Do you have any experience with ASA? It’s supposed to be the successor to ABS with better UV tolerance and lower fumes when printing. I’d experiment with it...

(NA) Who knows about 3D printing?

I’ve had a Prusa I3 MK3 (https://www.prusa3d.com/) for about two and a half months and have really enjoyed it so far. While researching which printer I wanted to buy I found it had a reputation for working well out of the box which was high on my list of priorities. I didn’t not want to have to...
