DavidWhite survives another lap around the Sun

Well sure, it's the "better part" since it's the part during which you were flying! Who's PC-12 are you flying and where does it reside in MN?

Actual IFR usage for GA flying

Been a while but IIRC, driving is even more frustrating and slower than you'd think.

How to get up in less common GA aircraft?

If you meet someone locally based with an airplane you'd like to fly, ask if you could trade some assistance with caring for the plane for a ride "someday". Things like cleaning the bugs off the leading edges and wheelpants are a chore that most any owner would appreciate some help with. And...

    Might Get Lucky...

The FAA will count logged PIC time anytime you are the "sole manipultor" of an aircraft that you have the ratings to fly. They've been talking about limiting that to aircraft that you have the required endorsements to act as PIC but I'm hopeful that will never come to pass. So if an airplane...

Actual IFR usage for GA flying

^^^^This. And if you interpret the regs (as supported by a few enforcement actions) this is actually required by the "consider possible delays" but in any case it really makes sense if you think about it. And on a related note, it's important to keep track of your anticipated fuel remaining...

    VFR cruising altitudes and FF

In the vicinity of a busy Class B that's not always (or even often) the case. Some TRACONs like to keep all the VFR traffic much further away from the airlines than is legally required let alone necessary or collision avoidance. But if you're getting FF a long way from any Class B, MOA, or...

The mission has changed. Mooney for sale

Well I still might call you crazy but I agree with your opinion of the other Lance's Mooney. I got to fly it several years ago and it was obvious how wel he took care of it.

Is My AI About To Bite The Dust?

Don't be too quick to overhaul or replace the AI, your problem could still be in the vacuum system depending on how your gauge is plumbed. If it's connected to measure the pressure delta across the AI and there's no possibility of a collapsed hose between the low pressure input to the AI and...

    Another crash at KRNO

Sorry, I definitely wasn't clear in that post. I was only thinking in terms of "joe pilot" who may or may not have been commercially rated flying a piston single in a fairly unregulated scenario as I'm guessing was the case in the accident. I think the real requirement ought to be something...

Any Cessna 182 Experience with a Rajay Turbo?

Very important! Unlike the TR182 combined throttle/wastegate control, the Rajay setup has a serious gotcha that has caught more than one pilot by (expensive) surprise. It's surprisingly easy to leave the wastegate partly or fully closed when descending from the FLs and if something unusual...

    NA Additional switches

Switches (and hubs for that matter) can always be extended by connecting another switch to a port on the first. Switches (and hubs) have no effect on the logical topology of a network, with multiple switches the network will behave exactly the same as it would if everything was connected to one...

Clint Eastwood to make biopic of pilot 'Sully' Sullenberger

IIRC there was a big push from the ALPA about this. It makes sense when you consider what it would be like if everything you said at your job was recorded and available to be played on the internet. The result would be countless lawsuits, divorces, etc. Saw the movie last night and I agree...

How do you fund your flying "hobby"?

As a few others have mentioned, avoiding debt for anything that doesn't appreciate or make money is one of the most important keys to financial success. Pay credit cards off completely each month, save and pay cash for cars and toys (including airplanes). The only downside is you may have to...

    Auto GCAS recovery

Sure looks like the pilot lost it in the first aggressive pull to 8.1 g peak then relaxed on the controls letting the aircraft enter a steep dive. Then the auto GCAS did indeed reach 9.1g in the pullout unless the other voice was an instructor who "helped" the computer. It's clear that the peak...

    Might Get Lucky...

Generally not allowed on a part 135 (charter) flight and even if the airplane is flown under part 91 the company probably won't allow this when pax are being carried. On a deadhead flight it would likely be allowed.

What is the real total cost of airplane ownership? Part I

Depending on where the airplane is based I think $12000 per year for sole ownership of a 4 cylinder fixed gear airplane flown 100 hrs/yr is feasible. Location is important because hangar/tiedown fees could consume over half of that $1000/mo budget. A decent but slow (100-120mph) airplane can...

    Oil Consumption

I change oil at 50 hours. I fill it to 10 Qt and add one when it gets below 9, usually only once before the next change so I'm actually consuming around 2 qt in 50 hrs. I've got around 800 hrs on the engines and the consumption's been about the same since break-in completed.

    (NA) STOP DOING THIS

Just get an app on your phone that plays farting noises on the speaker. Every time your neighbor starts clipping play the app loud enough that they can hear. If they can see you, wiggle your butt in your chair at the same time and sigh. It's pretty likely the clipping will stop after a few...

    Fixed-pitch vs. Constant-speed

^^^ This. Very few airplanes offer both a CS and FP prop as an option and for the few that do, the difference in performance is rarely significant. Typically you'll find CS props on airplanes with a larger ratio of cruise vs landing speed and that used to mean retractable gear. CS is also...
