    NA: Car remote starter recommendation

All of the cellphone based remote starters use a cellular modem and associated data service. In most cases the data service is provided by a third party for a fairly low monthly fee (like $3-5). This is unrelated to getting cell service for a car that can act as a cellular data terminal.

How many time have you run out of gas?

As a teenager I lived on a canal that connected to a large lake (Lake St. Clair in Michigan) and spent a lot of time on the lake in a boat. Several times I ran out of gas and had to paddle a few hundred feet to the house. This was actually almost on purpose as it was my desire to return with...

How many time have you run out of gas?

That's true for VFR flight but not for IFR: "(a) No person may operate a civil aircraft in IFR conditions unless it carries enough fuel (considering weather reports and forecasts and weather conditions) to--" That's applicable to VFR and IFR flight.

Should Actual IMC be a requirement? (II)

If the only flying you're doing is training then that might work although I suspect an IFR student might be a bit frazzled by the end of that trip. Worse yet, given the significant unpredictability of the weather you might find mid level ceilings and good visibility at the end of your 5 hr...

    Not Very Smart

You should have replied to that with: A very smart person knows what he doesn't know. Some "kids" never learn that.

Should Actual IMC be a requirement? (II)

If flyable IMC was readily available I'd say you should look for a CFII that does take students into IMC but there are plenty of areas where that just won't work. Many (perhaps even most) pilots wouldn't consider flying a trainer in the mountains in IMC and there are portions of the SW that...

Remember to make your mags "cold"

Triple Brain Fart. First was leaving the mags on, second was not checking the mag switch(es) before pulling the prop, and third was expecting that the engine wouldn't fire and thus exposing himself to injury when it did.

    Multi vs Single Instrument Rating

Sometimes I wonder if it's worth the extra fuel cost (about 50% more BTW, not double) but when I'm flying over low IMC, across Lake Michigan, around clusters/lines of TRW (w onboard radar), through the mountains, or at night, there's no question about the value of a second gas guzzling engine...

What do you mean turn off the landing light?

I'd like to add a couple suggestions for the OP WRT her first post: 1) I strongly recommend installing some sort of voltmeter on the airplane, preferably one that has an alert function. Ammeters are a lousy indication of the state of your electrical system for two reasons. One is that unless...

    Drones are harmless ...

Could be worse. Buzzards don't generally have liPo batteries which can easily ignite an intense fire if damaged severely. Seems likely that if DJI Phantom came though the windshield of my airplane at 200 mph the battery might be "seriously damaged". Good thing I've got a fire extinguisher...

    Experiencing LPV approach failures

Yes. Something else (or even a powered off KX155) could be rectifying transmissions from a strong ground station and making harmonics that interfere with your GPS. In fact I'd try transmitting on the frequencies John recommended on both of your comm radios. Yes. The separation requirements...

    Carbon monoxide

The stick on CO detectors do indeed detect CO but they don't indicate until the level gets pretty high. A small exhaust leak in the cabin heater can generate levels that cause serious impairment without the detector showing any signs of a problem. So it's true they're better than nothing...

    Use Stratus or Ipad GPS

When you put it in airplane mode you can turn the WiFi back on from the same page. Only the cellular radio can't be turned on until you turn AM off. You need WiFi to connect to the Stratus.

Engine shut down with avionics on

Close but not quite. Open the circuit on an inductor that was carrying current and the voltage across the coil reverses and can climb to a high voltage but the current decreases immediately and eventually goes to zero shortly after. Applying voltage to a capacitor does cause a current...

Engine shut down with avionics on

Both starter contactors plus the master contactor have diodes across the coils to absorb the inductive energy when the current to the coils is stopped. But they don't prevent voltage spikes on the main bus, they protect the associates switches from arcing.

    Cold weather and engine care..

I put firesleeve over the portion of the crankcase vents that run across the top of my Baron engines to keep the hot air from cooling down in really cold (e.g. -40 or below) air.

    Thinking About a Boat

I don't know if this applies to your engine but there may be passageways in the block that won't blow clear. If I were you I'd find the petcocks and open them. Chances are pretty good that dumping antifreeze in will protect the engine from residual water but why take the chance? On the engine...
