    Propeller windmilling, the truth

I don't believe all this bollocks about a windmilling propeller being equivalent to a disk of the same size. Look! here's an online tool to calculate the drag of things: https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/drag-equation Putting in a 75" diameter disk moving at 70kts at around 2000ft...

[NA] Health Insurance. US vs. Elsewhere

I'm not sure if that would happen though - the UK has free healthcare and a very similar employment rate.

[NA] Health Insurance. US vs. Elsewhere

As someone who lived most of their life in the UK, and who is now living in the US, here's my perspective: For most of my life, I never had to pay directly for any healthcare, and prescription drugs were very cheap. There is no charge for any treatment on the NHS, and a flat charge for...

    Raptor Aircraft

Here's the new plane in all its glory: Two electric 24" ducted fans driven by a generator in the spot the engine was in in the previous model more thrust than the Audi, less weight Boxed wing configuration, which will apparently: Make the wings stiffer Make the wings lighter Make the plane...

    Androids or iSheep?

I'm not much of an Apple user, but I have developed software for them. I disagree that iPhones and iPads cost 4x as much as Android devices - the basic iPad is really excellent value at $329, and I think you'd be hard pressed to get a similarly specced Android device for that price. It is also...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

Buy an Oculus Quest. It only tracks your head and your feet, so you can't go running, but you can use up a lot of energy waving your arms around and dodging things. Beat Saber is a high energy lightsaber cuttings things up game: (Try not to be put off by Jimmy Fallon) Pistol Whip is like John...

    High Density Altitude take offs

One thing to consider is that the rolling friction from your wheels will be greater at higher altitude. If the rotation speed is 60kts indicated, then at 9000ft DA, that will translate to 70kts true. Friction being proportional to the square of the velocity, you'd expect 36% more rolling...

    Air Conditioner

I like that cooler, but I wonder if it would be better to just put the radiator outside of the cooler, so you just have the tubes in and out of the radiator coming through the cooler lid. You could just add a couple of PC cooling fans to each side of the radiator to push and pull warm air from...

Should I bother with sport license if I can't buy a plane?

As others have said, you might find your options open up once we hit the end of 2023. You might also want to have a look at https://www.sportpilottalk.com/ - not nearly as much traffic as PoA, but it's all Sport Pilot related.

"Provisional" diagnosis of bipolar among other things.

I think if you go ahead with the idea of trying to get a medical it will only cost you vast amounts of money that may well result in you being entirely banned from flying. Instead, don't get a medical and get a Sport Pilot Certificate, for which you only need a driver's license, so long as you...

I don't know how to feel about electric bikes...

What the hell is wrong with you people? oooh it's cheating! oooh, it's for beginners! ooh! it's not real exercise! Electric bikes are transport, and fill a particular niche in the transport landscape. They are smaller, cheaper, and slower than cars. They allow you to ride in places you can't...

What is your (affordable) dream plane(s)?

That would be a very cool plane. I'm not sure if the ramp at the back would interfere with the landing gear or not. You might need a 336 instead. I think it would have enough power. Those folks that mated half a 337 to a Ford Pinto got it to fly at over gross weight with a single 210HP engine...

What is your (affordable) dream plane(s)?

Okay, so hear me out: A reverse Spectrum SA-550 where you take a Cessna 337 Skymaster, and remove the rear engine and replace the front engine with a turbine. The rear engine gets replaced with a ramp that lowers down. W&B might be might rely on you carrying your motorcycle or some other ballast.

How to find a suitable CFI?

One issue you will have to sort out beforehand is the TSA Alien Flight Program stuff. You probably did some of this last time around, but you may need to get fingerprinted in order for your application to go through. I don't know if they have anywhere in Europe where you could get that done. If...
