Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

Unfortunately none of those are the correct part. I wasn’t saying they don’t exist or are rare, but both the mechanic and I called around and didn’t have a line on a used one. I’ve also read threads where people claim to have looked for a bit before finding the correct used part. This thread was...

Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

I had seen these as well and mentioned it to the seller. Looks like he's going this direction. Living in Phoenix AZ I think these would be good if I end up purchasing the plane. MY only concern is the engine getting too cold if I travel somewhere during the winter.

Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

I'll call around tomorrow, but I've seen a thread or two where finding a used R/H cowl flap took some time. Rare, I don't think so, but it might take a bit to find a used one. That's my concern is that it will delay the purchase before one could be found and installed. Hence my question if we...

Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

I would think it would run cooler since more air can escape the bottom of the cowl. Maybe not an issue in the summer.

Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

On the 182 from what I’m researching it doesn’t seem that crazy that a cowl flap, usually the right one, departs in flight. Plenty of threads that seem like the same issue. Safety wire on the hinge pin wears through and the pin works out. Likely should have been caught at annual, but….

Flying airplane with missing cowl flap

So I’m thinking of buying a Cessna 182 that recently had a cowl flap go missing. The seller is looking for one now, but hasn’t found one yet. He’s talking about discounting the airplane the cost of a new one. My concern is the airplane legal to fly missing one cowl flap? If I buy the aircraft...

I do though. Roughly 1100 would be ideal, but I'll have to make do with 1050 if this deal goes through.

Lots of great info. Both mags replaced with overhauled about a year and a half ago. Fuel selector valve rebuilt at last annual. New windshield. New battery and new elt. Funny you mention the cowl flap. I talked to him last night and they just lost one during the last flight.

    Aircraft purchase questions

The engine has done over 200 hours in the past 2 years since being removed from storage. 1 cylinder was replaced due to low compression at the most recent annual. I'm told, and will ask for, the oil analysis that have been performed since being removed from storage. I'm told there have been...

    Aircraft purchase questions

    1) Noted, not sure it's a huge deal for me. 2) Generator has been replaced with an alternator. 3) Noted. 4) this is the one I'm a bit concerned with. I'm a heavy dude, so flying with a forward CG will be fairly common for me. 5) I wish it had an opening copilots window, but other than that not a...

    Aircraft purchase questions

I was told they replaced a cylinder during annual due to low compression. Valve guides would show up in oil consumption and possibly oil soaked lower plugs?

A pre-buy is non-negotiable. This will be my first plane and I'm not qualified to inspect it at the level it needs to be inspected.

    Aircraft purchase questions

This has 90% the panel I want and the price is such that I would be able to make it 100%(Replace the GPS/Com for a GPS/Nav/Com(likely an ifd440)) Honestly I couldn't afford a P or Q with the same panel. So my decision is this F with the panel I want or a P/Q with an old steam gauge panel. With...

    Aircraft purchase questions

I just did a 4.1 in a 172 and could have gone more. So I won't generally be the limiting factor. Now the wife, that's another story. I think a fuel stop would be welcome for her. When we travel by car she is looking to stop at the 2.5-3 hour mark, so a 3 hour leg would be about max for her.
