Tricks for IPad Viewing in the Sun

The anti-glare screen protector will help a lot but I also use a "portable" sun visor (plastic sheet with suction cup mount) to stick on the windows wherever necessary to block the sun shining on the iPad.

    Antenna location

My Arrow has the broadband VHF antenna (com 1) on the top and a "bent wire" antenna (com 2) on the bottom. I was thinking of swapping the bent wire for another broadband and switching the com 1 radio to the bottom antenna and, of course, comm 2 to the top. Only because of the "view" from the...

    Antenna location

Query...for in-flight ops is it better to have the com antenna mounted on the bottom or top of the fuselage? Seems like the bottom would have more "view" of the ground-based sites. Conversely, for ground ops (i.e. clearance delivery, ground, local control) seems like an antenna on the top of...

S-Tec 30 in the IFR world

To track a VOR radial or LOC the S-Tec 30 must be in the track "high" sensitivity mode, not HDG. From the S-Tec system 30 manual..."13. The HI-TRK Mode is designed for Localizer approaches, GPS/LORAN tracking, and a more aggressive NAV tracking such as VOR approaches." GPSS without the G5...

S-Tec 30 in the IFR world

I have an S-Tec 30 but it also has the 60 PSS auto-trim that I had installed a number of years ago. Got tired of having to manually trim in turbulence. I also have dual G-5s to provide roll steering (GPSS). Prior to the G-5s there was an S-Tec ST-901 to provide GPSS. So the whole setup...

    souls on board

Many years ago I had a "moonlight" flying job that occasionally required transporting deceased individuals. In the remarks section of the flight plan I entered "funeral flight". That satisifed the "head count".

SU Carbs - ever had them?

My '60 and '66 Volvos had twin SUs. To balance them was a pain but there was afloat type test device that made it pretty easy.

    Can anyone identify

Looks exactly like my JPI EDM-830. The format can be vertical or horizontal depending on your panel. The little "bump" between the white and black buttons is a "plug" that protects the USB jack for downloading performance data. There is no "JPI" logo on mine either.

    iPad recommendations

I use an iPad mini mounted upside down in an "X-Naut" cooling frame (also upside down) with the charging port on the "top". A RAM mount secures the mounting frame AND a 12 VDC to dual 5 VDC converter on the back of the X-Naut. One 5 VDC cord runs the X-Naut (to preserve its internal batteries)...

    What spaceship should I buy?

Too bad the script writer didn't know that a parsec is a measure of distance (~3.3 light years) and not speed!!!

    Planes collide in Idaho

Careful!! ADS-B in mountainous areas still has huge gaps in coverage. If the planes were low over the water of Lake C'oeur d'Alene with the mountains around there is the strong possibility that ADS-B was not accessible. Check out the coverage maps for ADS-B, particularly the required altitude AGL.

    Vintage / Retro Computing

Attached is a photo I just took of my Apple IIe. It controls the lighting outside my house, driveway detector, etc. It has been running 24X7 since 1984. The Apple "Basic" programming language is the only one I know!!!

    Ligado and GPS future

Congress is getting into the act now too. They are pushing a bill to make Ligado liable for any retrofit/modifications necessary to existing equipment to mitigate effects of their cell-phone signals. Hopefully this will transcend the incessant squabbling that is the only thing Congress seems...

    Ligado and GPS future

GPS signals are extremely weak and any strong terrestrial signal in adjacent frequencies can cause GPS loss. That is why the DoD, DHS, and many, many commercial GPS manufacturers and user groups are upset at the FCC allowing Ligado (ne Light Squared) to put up high powered terrestrial cell...

(TWM) Two Harbors, MN - North-Up & Marriage

You two certainly are lucky to enjoy your lives together and fly together. I am envious... I'm a "North Up" guy too...I tried Track Up on FF for sectionals...not good. Also on the Aeronautical map but that lacks detail IMHO. Certainly not on the Low altitude Enroute charts. The only place I...

    My IO-550 upgrade journey

For my engine exchange the time issue was in the ordering process. It took about 3 1/2 months from order time to new engine arrival. But during that time I had ordered and received new engine mounts, a new heating pad for the oil sump, a new oil cooler, a new hose kit and had the prop hub and...
