My XM antenna for the Garmin GDL-51 is on the glare shield and works fine. Even the GPS/XM antenna I got with my GPS Map 396 and which has been on the glare shield for MANY, MANY years works just fine.
Beware the "rotors" off of the mountains with strong westerly winds. A United 737 crashed on final approach to KCOS in 1991 after being rolled by a rotor. A sure sign that signifies staying on the ground or a long way distant is the sight of standing lenticular clouds along the Front Range.
Be sure to check NOTAMS as the COS approach control was out of service for a while (COVID?) but is back now. Ask for runway 17R or 35L as they are on the west side of the airport close to the FBOs. Be sure to tie your plane down SECURELY! Winds today were gusting to 35 kts. If the "BIG"...
Unfortunately at Meadow Lake (KFLY) there is also a lengthy list looking for hangars. A BIG problem is that there are MANY hangars full of old cars, storage stuff, etc. Each hangar is privately owned and the owner can do what they want with it.
Just did my night currency and filled it out on the iPad after the flight. Presto chango it is now on the web version! Must have been "the man behind the curtain".
I did an experiment today regarding crosswind landings. The temperature was +10 C, QNH 30.12, winds 280@22G26 (most 26!!!) favoring (!) our runway 33. So there was a 50 degree crosswind at average speed of (24 x sin (50 degrees)) that means a direct component of about 18 knots. I approached with...
Also depends on where you live. My house here in Colorado Springs is at 6300 feet MSL and sitting here at my desk my O2 sat is 97. Pattern altitude at my home drome is 8000. I don't use O2 unless I am flying above 12.5 for greater than 30 minutes but I do use my pulse-oximeter for those...
I second the opinions above regarding extra weight in the baggage area for one or two people only in the front seats!! Also maybe limit to 2 "notches" of flap until you get used to the "Cherokee Clunk".
Try receiving ADS-B weather from the ground (or low altitude AGL) in mountainous portions of the country. Isn't going to happen unless you are within sight of an ADS-B "tower". Satellite weather is the way to go in that environment.
I have the S-Tec 30 augmented with auto-trim (60 PSS) and the 901 for GPSS working with my GNS-530W. But subsequently I added G5s for AI and HSI. The 901 and its attendant "GPSS/HDG" pushbutton switch were removed and GPSS signal now comes from the G-5. I did "bump up" the GPSS "factor" in a...
I was based at 2W2 with my C-150 then C-172 in the 70's. In fact I worked with the FAA beginning in 1973 to get the VOR approach for 2W2 (selected that moniker in February 1976 over some other ones) and the approach was granted dated Aug 05, 1974 and became "active" in November/December of...
And RAIM (Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring) can be calculated for a specific airport at a specific time based on a minimum of 5 GPS satellites being received with appropriate geometry.
